About Jugalbandi & Musical Dialogues
When we set up a jugalbandi, the technical side is just as important as the music. I personally oversee the 8-12 channel mixer setup to ensure the distinct tones of the veena and the visiting instrument, whether it is a sitar or flute, are perfectly balanced for your venue.
A jugalbandi is not just two musicians playing together, it is a conversation. I approach these collaborations by finding a common ground between the structured beauty of Carnatic music and the improvisational depth of Hindustani traditions. Whether we are blending the veena with a bansuri flute or a sitar, the goal is always to create a high-energy dialogue that keeps the audience engaged.
Each session includes a dedicated joint rehearsal to ensure our rhythmic patterns, especially when we bring in a dual percussion section featuring mridangam and tabla, are seamless. This musical interplay creates a unique, spontaneous experience that you simply cannot get from a solo recital.
I have performed these fusion sets at prestigious venues like the Bengaluru International Arts Festival and Chowdiah Memorial Hall. Because these performances involve diverse instruments and specialized audio requirements, I work closely with your sound team to manage the mixing needed to capture the nuances of both styles. If you are planning an event that needs a sophisticated musical centrepiece, this format brings a level of dynamism that resonates with everyone in the room.
Suma Sudhindra
I am Suma, and I live for the thrill of a musical conversation. Nothing excites me more than stepping on stage with a fellow artist, where we start with an idea and build a spontaneous dialogue that surprises even us. I love bringing this collaborative energy to events.
