Konnakol and Rhythmic Artistry for Dance
Bringing rhythm to life through vocal percussion. I create custom rhythmic scores and konnakol patterns for dance productions, giving your choreography that extra punch.
A glimpse into the studio recording process for a jathi. You can see the artists in the vocal booth performing the konnakol, which I composed specifically for the production 'Krishna'.
A composition session with a fellow artist. We are working through complex Carnatic swara patterns and konnakol, using technology to notate the ideas as we create them. This is the groundwork for a new piece.
Just a fun, collaborative konnakol duet I created. This shows the playful side of rhythm and how vocal percussion can be a performance in itself.
About Konnakol & Rhythmic Artistry
When I compose a jathi, it is not just about counting beats. It is about how the rhythm breathes with the dancer. I spend hours in the studio mapping out the exact syllables for your konnakol, ensuring the vocal percussion matches the intensity of your performance. Whether you need a crisp, sharp pattern for a fast-paced piece or a complex, layered structure for a slow number, we will build it note by note until it feels perfectly synchronized with your movement.
The Heartbeat of Your Performance
Rhythm is the core of Indian classical dance. Konnakol, the art of performing percussion syllables vocally, acts as the bridge between the dancer and the mridangam. In my Bengaluru studio, I treat every rhythmic composition as a bespoke piece of architecture.
My Process
I start by understanding the choreography. We do not just pick a raga and tala and go. We look at the specific energy you want to convey. If it is a Shiva Tandava piece, we need force and speed. For a subtle Krishna piece, the konnakol needs to be fluid and melodic. I work closely with mridangam and violin artists in Bangalore to build the full ensemble sound for your stage shows.
Why Work With Me
I bring a mix of traditional Carnatic discipline and modern production clarity. My setup includes high-end condenser mics to capture the nuances of the vocal percussion, ensuring the raw stems you get are clean and punchy. Whether you are prepping for your Arangetram or a contemporary fusion performance, I am here to help you nail that rhythm.
