About this collection
The Grey Grotto demonstrates our approach to site-specific architecture, where we use heavy texture and light-permeable screens to manage thermal comfort while framing views of the landscape. It is this balance of privacy and openness that defines our work on this project.
Our Design Philosophy for The Grey Grotto
This project represents our commitment to creating structures that respond to their environment. We chose a material palette of textured grey paint, exposed brick, and clay jali screens to ground the house within its surroundings while providing necessary thermal mass. The use of jali screens is not merely for aesthetics; these elements filter sunlight and air into the internal courtyards, creating a passive cooling effect throughout the day.
Spatial Planning and Connectivity
- Indoor-Outdoor Flow: We designed the living spaces to open directly onto the pool deck and dining pavilion. This allows the residents to transition between air-conditioned interiors and the expansive lawn without rigid barriers.
- Materiality: The combination of textured concrete and clay tiles defines the building's identity. We utilized deep, monochromatic greys for the main structure, allowing the warmer, earthy tones of the terracotta elements to act as a visual highlight.
- Privacy and Views: Despite the openness of the ground floor, the building remains a private retreat. We oriented the windows and outdoor spaces to maximize the view of the surrounding landscape while maintaining a sense of enclosure within the courtyard areas.
