Explore Carnatic improvisation, rhythm, and melody in my interactive sessions. We move beyond theory to find the sweet spot where structure meets emotion.

An invitation to my first in-person solo workshop in Chennai, focusing on manodharma. These sessions are practical and interactive, designed to help you find new ideas and richness in your Alapanas and Swarams.

This poster announced a workshop on Alapanas and Swarams. These thematic sessions are open to all musicians who want to deepen their improvisational skills and performance techniques.

It was humbling to see the enthusiastic response for my Chennai workshop, which sold out quickly. I look forward to creating more such opportunities for us to learn and grow together.

A selfie with the wonderful participants of the Namba Aathu Katcheri workshop. The energy and dedication in the room were truly inspiring.

A snippet from a workshop in New Jersey, where we explored how to meld `layam` and melody. These sessions are about shared discovery, and this was a particularly delightful musical exchange.

A moment from an online teaching session. Even remotely, we can find fun mnemonics and memory aids to break down complex phrases and make learning more intuitive.

A wide view of the engaged audience at the Namba Aathu Katcheri workshop. It's a privilege to share my musical thoughts with such an attentive group of `rasikas` and students.

About this collection

My workshops are not lectures. Whether we are untangling a complex swara pattern or building stamina on the veena, the focus is on practical discovery. You will be actively playing, experimenting, and refining your technique rather than just taking notes.

A Different Approach to Learning

I view music as a continuous, messy, and beautiful experiment. My goal in these workshops is to strip away the complex layers until only the emotion remains. We go beyond the basics to look at the 'why' and 'how' of Carnatic music.

Workshop Formats

  • Thematic Sessions: These are for vocalists and instrumentalists alike. We dissect specific aspects like Manodharma, Alapana structuring, or the interplay between Layam (rhythm) and melody. We break down the Kanakku (mathematical aspects) to show how it serves as a tool for creativity rather than a rigid rule.
  • Veenopasana Intensives: This is purely for advanced veena players. It is four hours of non-stop sadhana. We focus on fretboard control, gamaka shuddham (note purity), and building the stamina required for a full-length concert. Because of the intensity, this is a selective, practical drill session.

Private Mentorship

For those who need direct guidance, I offer 1-on-1 sessions. We work on specific gaps in your performance, critique your concert planning, or dive into complex Pallavi construction. These are honest, critical feedback sessions intended for serious practitioners.

Why Join?

Music is a shared exploration. Whether we are in a lecture hall in Chennai or a studio in Kerala, I bring the same focus to the session. If you are curious about the mechanics of a raga or want to refine your improvisational voice, we will get along just fine. Come prepared to play, make mistakes, and learn.
