Kathak Stage Productions & Dance Dramas
Namaskar. I bring stories to life on stage through Kathak, blending choreography, live music, and dramatic lighting. Whether it is a thematic production or a narrative piece, my work is about creating a dialogue between the dancer and the audience.
A full company formation from my production 'Ek Anant'. Creating these large ensemble choreographies requires immense teamwork and a shared vision to bring the story to life with power and precision.
A scene from 'Ek Anant' depicting the fierce battle between Rama and Ravana. The choreography here uses dynamic movements and formations to portray the clash of arrows and the trembling fury of the battlefield.
I adapted Disney's 'The Lion King' into a full-length Kathak musical, 'King of the Jungle', with 70 of my students. It was a joy to choreograph and also design the costumes and makeup, introducing them to musical theatre through our classical dance form.
'Nishant' or 'end of the night' was a piece I choreographed during the pandemic. It explores the journey from confinement and uncertainty to the hope of a new dawn, questioning if we have learned our lessons about nature and freedom.
This piece, 'Delight', was a unique challenge where I blended Kathak with a magic trick for a play by filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane. It was a fascinating process of learning the illusion and then weaving it into a rhythmic choreography.
Composing and choreographing new 'bandishes' or compositions in complex rhythmic cycles like the 11-beat 'matra' is a creative joy. This is a solo performance from the Nritya Setu festival.
This is the official poster for my production 'Ek Anant'. A performance is a collaboration of many artists, from dancers to the live musicians on tabla, vocals, and sitar who create the soul of the show.
A short glimpse into my production 'Samanvay', which explores harmony and synthesis. The choreography here focuses on group dynamics and the visual patterns created by the dancers moving as one entity.
Playing the role of Ravan in 'Ek Anant' was an intense experience. The choreography aimed to show his arrogance and the ego that led to his downfall, proving that evil, however strong, cannot triumph over virtue.
The journey of creating 'Ek Anant' involved conceptualizing, choreographing, and designing the music with my team. This clip shows the culmination of that process on stage.
About Major Productions & Theatrical Works
For me, choreography is a conversation. When directing these productions, my focus is on the interaction between the dancer and live musicians. We don’t just set steps; we build a narrative where lighting, costume, and complex rhythmic cycles (taals) work together to tell a complete story. If you are planning a thematic show, we should discuss your venue, audience size, and the live musical ensemble required to bring the vision to life.
Each production I create—whether it is an adaptation of the Ramayan like 'Ek Anant' or a conceptual piece like 'Nishant'—starts with a single spark. It is never about just executing steps; it is about the sawal-jawab (question-answer) between the dancer and the live orchestra. We invest hours in riyaaz to ensure that the tabla, sitar, and vocals breathe life into the choreography.
What goes into a production?
- Concept & Narrative: I design the script and visual tone based on your theme, whether it is mythological, contemporary, or Sufi-inspired.
- The Ensemble: A full-scale show typically features 6-8 senior repertory dancers from my company and a dedicated team of live musicians.
- Technical Precision: We work closely with lighting designers to create depth, ensuring the stage becomes a living, breathing world.
If you are organizing a cultural festival, a corporate showcase, or an independent theatre production, we can tailor the scale to your venue. From full-length 60-minute ballets to specific thematic segments, the focus remains on the purity of Kathak and the emotional connection of the abhinaya (expression). It is a collaborative process, and I am happy to guide you through how we align the music, costumes, and movement to suit your event.
