Kathak finds new meaning when it engages in a conversation with other art forms. I create performances that blend Kathak with Sufi poetry, Carnatic music, and classical styles like Bharatanatyam.

Sharing a moment on stage with Bharatanatyam artist Parshwanath Upadhye during our duet production, 'Raag Raagini'. This collaboration was a deep dive into the rhythmic and expressive possibilities when two distinct classical styles meet.

A vibrant piece I choreographed blending different Indian dance styles. It features Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, and Folk dance, celebrating the rich diversity of India's cultural heritage on one stage.

Choreographing the Sufi Kalaam 'Chhaap Tilak' in Kathak style was a beautiful experience. The choreography uses the flowing movements and spins of Kathak to interpret the profound poetry of Amir Khusrau.

It was fun to choreograph a Carnatic 'jati' in Kathak style for 'Raag Raagini'. The process of co-arranging the music was enriching, as we found common ground between two different approaches to rhythm.

A glimpse into the creation of 'Raag Raagini', a full-length duet production with Parshwanath Upadhye. The piece is a testament to the beautiful synergy between Kathak and Bharatanatyam.

The official poster for our performance at the prestigious NCPA, where 'Raag Raagini' shared the stage with the legendary Kathak maestro, Pt. Rajendra Gangani.

A tender moment from 'Raag Raagini', where storytelling transcends the boundaries of style. The 'abhinaya' or expressive aspect of both Kathak and Bharatanatyam finds a common language here.

Rehearsals for the Sufi Kalam 'Damadam Mast Kalandar'. Fusing the devotional energy of Sufi music with the structured grace of Kathak creates a powerful and uplifting performance.

Exploring the Marathi short story 'Phoolwali' through a blend of Kathak and Bharatanatyam in 'Raag Raagini'. Literary adaptations are a wonderful way to translate words into the language of dance.

A teaser for our duet production 'Raag Raagini'. These collaborations are about finding a connection, a point of harmony between different artistic expressions.

About Collaborations & Fusion

In projects like 'Raag Raagini', the goal is never just to merge styles for a visual spectacle. It is about finding that precise moment where the 'sawal-jawab' (question-answer) between Kathak and another form feels completely natural. We spend hours in the studio working on rhythmic calculations to ensure our distinct footwork patterns complement each other, rather than fighting for space on the floor.

The Art of Conversation

My approach to fusion is rooted in respect for the vocabulary of each style. When I work with Bharatanatyam artists or musicians from Carnatic traditions, we do not just change the music; we adapt the grammar of movement. The aim is to create a piece where the grace of Kathak meets the sculptural precision of other styles.

Technical Challenges in Fusion

Fusing Kathak with other styles like Sufi or Carnatic music involves complex 'taal' (rhythmic cycle) management. Whether it is choreographing to a Carnatic 'jati' or interpreting Amir Khusrau's poetry in 'Chhaap Tilak', the process requires:

  • Musical Analysis: Aligning with live musicians to ensure the rhythmic patterns honor the composition.
  • Stylistic Integration: Blending the fluidity of Kathak spins with the specific mudras and postures required by the collaborative style.
  • Studio Riyaaz: Long hours of trial and error to ensure the synchronization between dancers remains organic.

Why Collaborate?

These projects are an extension of my practice. They allow me to break away from traditional structures and test the limits of what Kathak can express. If you are looking for a performance that bridges classical roots with contemporary themes or inter-disciplinary dialogue, my team and I approach every production as a complete world, from the lighting and costumes to the final movement.
