We often think healthy eating means salads and starving, but my own health journey started with dal, chawal, and seasonal sabzi. I lost 28 kgs by trusting our traditional Indian wisdom rather than following Western fads. Here are the simple, everyday meals that keep me and my family energized.

A collage showing what I eat in a day. It includes fresh juice, a smoothie bowl, a large salad, coconut water, and a wholesome khichdi dinner, proving that a healthy diet is full of variety and flavor.

An easy and yummy breakfast I make for my daughter in under 5 minutes. It's a simple spread of boiled corn and peas blended with nutritional yeast on whole wheat bread.

A healthy Indian breakfast idea: Moong Dal Chilla. These protein-packed savory pancakes are delicious and you can add grated carrots or spinach to the batter for extra nutrition.

A comforting and healthy breakfast: Upma with lots of veggies. This bowl of semolina is packed with carrots, beans, and peas, with a squeeze of lemon for a tangy twist.

A quick and light Indian breakfast: Poha. Made with flattened rice, turmeric, curry leaves, and roasted peanuts, it's flavorful and ready in minutes.

A nutritious twist on a classic South Indian breakfast: Millet Idlis. These soft, fluffy idlis are made with ragi and served with a creamy coconut chutney.

Today's simple meal: a no-masala matar and carrot sabzi served with a protein-rich sattu ka paratha. Food doesn't need to be complicated to be tasty and healthy.

Here are three natural sources of protein I use for my daughter. A sattu smoothie for breakfast, a rajma and kala chana sabzi for dinner, and sautéed edamame for a snack.

A healthy and complete meal on my plate. This features a multi-grain paratha with peanut curd rice and a side of almond butter, showing how you can balance your meals holistically.

A simple yet satisfying meal of dosa with kala chana curry and peanut curd. This plate shows how traditional Indian meals can be balanced, delicious, and completely plant-based.

About Simple & Nourishing Meal Ideas

My kitchen secret is simple: I stopped counting calories and started focusing on adding nutrition. Instead of asking what I need to cut out, I ask what fresh veggie or protein source I can add to the plate. Whether it is tossing grated carrots into your morning Upma or blending protein-rich chickpeas for a sandwich filling, the goal is not restriction, it is balance. You do not need fancy superfoods to get healthy, you just need to cook your daily meals with a little bit of intention.

Healthy food is not supposed to be complicated. It should be 'sasti-sundar-tikau'—affordable, beautiful, and sustainable. In my home, we do not follow complex macro-counting rules because life is too busy for that. We focus on the basics.

Why traditional Indian food is the ultimate fuel

People often ask if they need to give up rice or roti to lose weight. My answer is always no. Our traditional staples like moong dal, poha, and millet-based dishes are nutrient-dense and perfectly designed for our lifestyle. The key is in how you prepare them and what you pair them with.

My practical approach to daily meals:

  • Protein isn't just powder: You can find high-quality protein in sattu, rajma, kala chana, and even tofu. I use these daily to keep my energy levels high without needing supplements.
  • Seasonality is key: My meals change with the market. If carrots and peas are fresh, they go into the chilla. If it is summer, we lean on cooling ingredients. Eating what is in season ensures you get the most nutrients naturally.
  • The 5-minute rule: If a breakfast takes longer than 15 minutes to make, I usually adapt it. A simple vegetable upma or a chickpea sandwich is filling, protein-packed, and faster than ordering takeout.
