About The Black Belt Journey: Dojo Training
Earning your black belt here requires more than technical skill; it demands strict adherence to the traditional Shorin-ryu Shorinkan syllabus. Expect 3 to 4 sessions per week, lasting 90 to 120 minutes each, covering kata correction, bunkai application, and physical conditioning. This is a committed journey, not a short-term fitness goal.
The journey to Shodan is built upon the foundation of kata, kobudo, and physical endurance. At our Honbu Dojo, we do not simply train for a rank; we train to understand the philosophy of Okinawan karate-do. This process is intensive, requiring you to master complex forms such as Shugoro No Gorin and demonstrate proficiency in traditional weaponry like the Bo staff, Tonfa, and Sai.
My training methodology follows the lineage I received directly from Hanshi Minoru Nakazato. When you train with us, you are following the same path taken by my senior students who travel to Okinawa for their Dan testing. The grading process is not just a test of stamina and tile breaking; it is an evaluation of your technical accuracy, spirit, and consistency.
We focus on these key pillars during your preparation:
- Technical Precision: We dedicate hours to kata correction. You will not move to the next level until your fundamental stances and movements meet the Shorinkan standard.
- Kobudo Skills: An advanced practitioner must be capable with tools. Weapons training is mandatory for our black belt candidates to build coordination and distance awareness.
- Conditioning: You will engage in outdoor endurance training and controlled kumite drills to ensure your body can support your technical knowledge.
If you have already achieved a black belt, we offer advanced kata seminars to help you progress toward higher Dan rankings. For those preparing for the 2025-26 grading examination, the focus is entirely on perfecting the syllabus and meeting the formal registry requirements for Japan. Be prepared to show grit, patience, and a genuine hunger to improve.
