About Portraits, People & The Human Form
When I sketch a face, I am not just looking at features; I am hunting for the spark—that specific tilt of the head or depth in the eyes that makes someone who they are. Because I work exclusively in charcoal on archival paper, every drawing captures textures that standard photographs often lose, from the fine grain of skin to the subtle play of light across an expression. If you are commissioning a portrait, we start by selecting a high-resolution reference image, and from there, I build the likeness layer by layer.
My approach to portraits is rooted in the philosophy that monochrome removes distraction. By stripping away color, we are forced to confront the raw emotion of the subject. Whether it is a tribute to a loved one or a classic figure study, the process remains the same. I use compressed charcoal and graphite, applying them to heavyweight, acid-free archival paper that is designed to last generations without yellowing or degrading. This ensures that the deep blacks and subtle greys remain as sharp decades from now as they are on the day I finish the work. Each piece is treated with multiple layers of museum-grade fixative, preventing charcoal dusting and preserving the fine detail—down to individual hair strands and skin pores. For those looking for statement pieces, I also work on primed linen canvases, which offer a different depth and texture, ideal for larger-than-life portraits or multi-subject compositions. Once completed, every original artwork is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and gallery-grade framing with UV-protective glass, ensuring your portrait is ready to display.
Om Thadkar
I am Om, and I believe every face holds a story waiting to be told. I translate those narratives into charcoal, focusing on the subtle details that reveal character and soul. My work is about freezing a moment in time, creating a connection that lingers long after you walk away from the canvas.
