Behind the Canvas: My Process and Scale
Step into my studio to see how raw charcoal transforms into hyperrealistic art. Here is a look at the scale, technique, and dedication behind every piece.

A work-in-progress shot of a black horse portrait, which I fondly call 'Kalaghoda'. This shows the meticulous process of building up layers of charcoal.

About The Artist's Studio: Process & Scale
Hyperrealistic art is about more than just the image, it is about the physical presence of a piece on your wall. When you choose a large-format linen canvas or a detailed archival print, you are bringing a permanent fixture into your home, not just a decoration. Understanding the scale, whether it fits a feature wall or a cozy study, is the first step in our process together.
My Creative Process
Every piece begins on a blank sheet of archival paper or primed linen canvas. I use compressed charcoal and graphite pencils to build depth, layer by layer. My focus is on the micro-details: individual skin pores, the texture of a horse’s mane, or the subtle wrinkles of a hand. This is a slow, meditative process.
Choosing the Right Scale
The impact of a drawing often depends on where it lives.
- Feature Walls: My large-format linen canvases, reaching up to 24 sq ft, are designed to command attention in living rooms or offices. They use chiaroscuro effects to play with light and shadow in large spaces.
- Intimate Spaces: For studies, bedrooms, or hallways, my archival prints or smaller charcoal studies offer detailed, focused interest without overwhelming the room.
Quality and Longevity
I ensure every piece is protected for the long term. Originals are treated with museum-grade fixative to prevent charcoal dusting, and my giclee prints use 12-color archival pigment inks on cotton rag paper, rated for over 100 years. If you are looking to commission a custom portrait or acquire a piece for your home, I help you select the size and finish—be it glass-framed or a raw linen finish—that best suits your interior environment.
