Graphite & Charcoal Portraits: Hand-Drawn Realism

There is something raw and honest about a black and white sketch that color can't quite hit. I love playing with deep shadows and fine lines to make portraits look like they’re breathing.

My completed hyper-realistic charcoal sketch of a roaring tiger. I used Generals and Camlin charcoal pencils to create the deep blacks and soft fur texture.

A straight-on view of the finished tiger sketch, capturing its fierce expression.

A close-up detail of the tiger's mouth and whiskers, showing the fine lines created with a mono zero eraser.

A surrealist graphite portrait of a woman with large angel wings covering her head. This piece combines realism with imagination.

A work-in-progress shot of my first Ariana Grande graphite portrait. The face is fully rendered, showing the smooth skin texture before the hair is drawn.

Another angle of the Ariana Grande WIP, with the sharp Faber-Castell pencils I used.

The first stage of the Ariana Grande portrait, showing just the face emerging from the blank paper.

A work-in-progress of my second Ariana Grande graphite portrait. Here, the face is complete, and the hair is just an outline.

About Graphite & Charcoal Realism

I work on 200gsm acid-free paper using professional brands like Faber-Castell and Camlin, so these aren't just doodles, they are pieces meant to last. Since I share progress shots throughout, you will get to see the eyes or the shading come to life before the final piece is sealed with a professional fixative spray and carefully packed for delivery.

Why graphite and charcoal?

I’m a little obsessed with the contrast you get with charcoal. While colors are fun, there’s an intensity to monochrome that focuses entirely on the subject's expression. Whether it’s a pet’s fur or the details in a portrait, graphite allows me to layer and blend until I get the likeness right.

The process

Creating these isn't instant. A single piece can take anywhere from 4 to 16 hours of work.

  • Drafting: I start with a light sketch to make sure the proportions are spot on before I touch a pencil for shading.
  • Layering: I use varying grades of graphite (from soft, dark 6B to crisp, light H pencils) to build depth.
  • Detailing: For those tiny highlights, like light reflecting in an eye or the shine on jewelry, I use a Tombow Mono Zero eraser to pull the white out of the graphite.
  • Fixing: Once the drawing is complete, I coat the surface with a clear fixative spray. This stops the charcoal from smudging and keeps your art crisp for years to come.

Things to know before you order

  • Paper quality: I only use 200gsm Bristol or similar acid-free paper, so the paper won't yellow over time.
  • Packaging: I sandwich the work between rigid cardboard sheets. No bending, no damage, just art.
  • Care: Since these are original drawings, I recommend framing them behind glass as soon as you get them to protect the surface from dust and humidity.

If you have a specific reference photo in mind, just send it over. I’m always down to look at what you’re thinking and see how we can make it happen.
