Monochrome Wildlife Portraits: Charcoal and Graphite Art
Capturing the raw spirit of the animal kingdom through detailed charcoal and graphite work, focused on texture and light.
A charcoal portrait of 'Shambhu', a Bengal tiger from Tadoba, on a 2 by 3 foot paper. I used a dark background to emphasize its fiery gaze and striped coat, embodying the untamed spirit of the Indian wild.
Titled "Sardar", this charcoal on linen artwork shows a 'Kajli Khilar' bull, a breed known for its hard work and grace. The piece symbolizes stability, strength, and power.
A short video showcasing my charcoal artwork "Valor," a 3 by 4 foot piece on linen canvas. It highlights the dynamic and powerful essence of the bull.
This is 'RUBAB', a 31 by 41 inch drawing of a white bull in motion. I used charcoal and graphite pencils to create a striking contrast against the dark background, highlighting its form and energy.
The framed version of my artwork 'RUBAB', showing how the piece looks when ready for display. The simple black frame complements the monochrome drawing.
"Zeal," my first work of 2023, is a 40 by 46 inch charcoal and graphite drawing of a white horse. This piece embodies freedom and nobility, reflecting my special affinity for these majestic animals.
This large 5.5 by 3.5 foot charcoal drawing, 'Equine Companions', captures the dynamic motion of a mare and her foal galloping together. The composition is designed to convey a sense of energy and connection.
'Leather & Flesh', a 2 by 3 foot hyperrealistic charcoal drawing. This piece focuses on the intimate details of equestrian life, from the texture of the leather boot to the powerful muscle of the horse.
'Vigor', a detailed charcoal drawing focusing on a horse's hoof and horseshoe. This 2 by 3 foot piece on linen canvas explores the strength and structure of the animal from a unique perspective.
A mock-up showing how 'Vigor' would look framed and displayed in a home setting. It helps visualize the artwork's scale and impact on a wall.
About The Untamed Wild: Monochrome Wildlife Portraits
Charcoal is a living medium, which is why every wildlife piece I create is treated with multiple layers of museum-grade fixative. This protects the delicate graphite and charcoal dust, ensuring the depth of the blacks and the sharpness of the white highlights remain crisp on your wall for decades without smudging or fading.
Working in monochrome forces a focus on the essential—the play of light and shadow, the tension in a muscle, and the gaze of the subject. When I sketch a Bengal tiger from Tadoba or a Kajli Khilar bull, I aim to strip away the distraction of color to reveal the raw character of the animal.
The Medium and Technique
I primarily work on heavyweight archival white paper or primed linen canvas. For larger statement pieces, such as my 4 by 6 foot compositions of elephant herds, linen offers a superior texture that holds the charcoal intensity better than paper. Every piece is hand-drawn, utilizing techniques that highlight skin pores and individual fur strands to achieve a hyperrealistic effect.
Preservation and Display
All originals are framed with gallery-grade glass and acid-free matting to prevent moisture damage and yellowing. If you are selecting from my limited edition prints, you are getting 12-color archival pigment inks on 300 GSM cotton rag paper. These are hand-signed and numbered, adhering to the same archival standards as my original work.
Why Monochrome Wildlife?
Whether it is the dynamic motion of a galloping horse or the quiet majesty of an elephant, these pieces are intended to start conversations. They are not merely pictures of animals, but studies of movement, stability, and resilience. Every piece is shipped with a Certificate of Authenticity and specialized packaging to ensure it reaches you in the same condition it left my studio.
Om Thadkar
I am Om, and I spend my days trying to translate the raw energy of animals into graphite lines on paper. When I draw a tiger or an elephant, I am not just sketching a shape, I am looking for that specific moment of movement or stillness that makes the animal feel alive.
