Serene and Spiritual Charcoal Art by Om Thadkar
I use charcoal and graphite to capture stillness and depth, turning blank surfaces into moments of quiet reflection. These pieces are designed to bring peace to your home or office.
'Eternal Peaks', a large 48 by 30 inch charcoal and graphite drawing of the Himalayas. The monochrome palette emphasizes the raw, rugged contours of the mountains, conveying a sense of permanence.
'Haze', a 2 by 3 foot charcoal on linen piece. It depicts a lone sailboat emerging from a thick fog, creating an atmospheric and mysterious seascape.
A serene 2 by 3 foot charcoal drawing of a lone figure on a boat at dusk. The soft light and calm water reflections create a peaceful and contemplative mood.
'Serene', an 18 by 36 inch charcoal drawing on white paper, shown here framed at an exhibition. The artwork captures a tranquil moment on the water.
'Bliss' is a 24 by 24 inch charcoal portrait of Buddha, designed to evoke tranquility and spiritual introspection. The monochromatic tones and soft shadows create a calming presence, perfect for a space of meditation.
About Serene & Spiritual
Because I work primarily with compressed charcoal on archival paper or linen, these pieces require specific framing choices to ensure they remain pristine. For my large scale linen works, I often omit glass to highlight the natural canvas texture, whereas smaller paper portraits are finished with UV protective glass and acid free matting to prevent fading. This ensures that the deep blacks of the charcoal remain intense over time.
Creating art that evokes stillness is a deliberate process of managing light and shadow. When I approach a subject like the Buddha or the Himalayas, the challenge is not just capturing the form, but capturing the silence. I use a combination of compressed charcoal and graphite pencils to build layers of texture that allow light to interact with the surface of the paper or linen.
Why Charcoal and Graphite?
Monochrome works best when the goal is emotional clarity. Without the distraction of color, the viewer is forced to look at the contours of a mountain range or the expression on a face. I use high quality archival paper for smaller, intricate studies because it holds fine detail well. For my larger compositions, such as my 6 foot wide linen pieces, the fabric provides a robust texture that adds depth to the shadows and brings a tactile quality to the artwork.
Preservation and Care
All my original works are treated with multiple layers of museum grade fixative to prevent the charcoal from dusting. If you are looking to place these in a high traffic area, I recommend the framed archival paper option. The acid free mount and gallery style glass provide a complete seal against environmental factors. For those interested in statement pieces on canvas, the varnished linen is designed for durability without needing the weight of glass, offering a clean, contemporary aesthetic that integrates well into modern interior design.
