Don't get distracted by front-of-pack claims. Learn to decode ingredient lists and nutritional facts so you know exactly what goes into your shopping basket.

Reading food labels is a crucial step in making informed choices. I always tell my clients to check the serving size, calorie count, sugar and sodium content, and the ingredient list. If you don't recognize the ingredients, it's best to put the item back.

Be careful when grabbing a beverage from the shelf. A single soda can contain more than your daily recommended sugar intake, and many energy drinks are high in caffeine and artificial sweeteners. Always check the label and make every sip count.

Is your ice cream really ice cream? Many products are "frozen desserts" made with vegetable oil. I teach you how to check the ingredient list for hidden sugars like syrups and unhealthy trans fats to make a smarter choice for your sweet treat.

If you eat instant noodles frequently, you should know what's in them. They often contain MSG, which can affect concentration, trans fats that are bad for your heart, and high levels of sodium. I especially advise pregnant and lactating mothers to avoid them.

About Become a Smart Shopper

Most processed foods hide unhealthy fats and sweeteners behind complicated names. When I teach clients to shop, we focus on the ingredient list rather than the calories alone. If you cannot recognize an ingredient or if sugar appears in the first three items, it is time to put that product back on the shelf.
