A glimpse into our current architectural interventions where we listen to the land and uncover the hidden narratives of historic spaces.

Reflections in a flooded room of a new project site. Water and light reveal the elegant arches of the windows, hinting at the building's past and offering a moment of poetry before the rigorous work of restoration begins.

An early exploration of a new heritage project. The exposed brick, original window grill, and wooden beams offer a rich palette of 'Found' materials that will inform the narrative of this upcoming adaptive reuse project.

A raw interior space in a new project. The exposed brick and wooden roof structure provide the historical canvas upon which we will begin the process of surgical intervention and architectural dialogue.

A moment of quiet contemplation on a new site. The interplay of light, shadow, and raw materials is where the story of a building begins. My process starts here, by listening to what the space has to say.

About New Horizons: Works in Progress

Each of these projects begins with a forensic structural audit. We strip back layers of modern additions to reveal original brickwork and timber, allowing us to determine exactly where to reinforce the structure before we ever consider a new design element. It is a process of unmaking to find the building's true bones.

The Archaeological Approach to Architecture

For us, restoration is not merely a technical task but a form of archaeology. Before we introduce any new materials, we spend weeks in the 'unmaking' phase. This involves careful, manual plaster removal to assess the condition of masonry and timber without damaging the underlying patina. Our team utilizes 3D LiDAR scanning to map structural deviations, ensuring that our architectural intervention is based on the reality of the site rather than an assumption of geometry.

Balancing the Old with the New

Once the structure is stabilized, the conversation between the 'Found' and the 'Made' begins. We prioritize the retention of original features—like North-light trusses or Burma Teak columns—while integrating modern necessities such as industrial HVAC systems and gallery-grade lighting. The challenge is to introduce these elements without cutting into the heritage masonry, often routing services externally or through custom-fabricated steel inserts.

Site Dynamics

Every site we manage requires a unique response to climate and history. In humid coastal regions, we focus on foundation stabilization and moisture management to prevent settlement. In arid landscapes, our interventions shift toward thermal mass and passive cooling strategies. By maintaining principal involvement throughout the build, we ensure that the vision we articulate during the design phase survives the construction reality on the ground.

We approach every project as a conversation with the land and its history. For us, the work begins in silence, uncovering the narratives embedded in the stone and structure before we ever pick up a pencil.
