My Iyengar Yoga Lineage: Learning the Real Method
These photographs are not just memories. They represent the years of direct, rigorous instruction I received from my Guruji, Dr. B.K.S. Iyengar, which forms the foundation of every class I teach today.
A moment with Guruji. His presence was formidable, and his knowledge of the body and the yoga sutras was unparalleled. To learn from him was to understand the true depth of this subject.
Standing beside Guruji during an event. Being his disciple meant observing, listening, and practicing with unwavering dedication. What I teach in my online classes is a continuation of his life's work.
A portrait of Guruji on his 102nd birthday. His energy and vitality, even in his later years, were a direct result of his lifelong, disciplined yoga practice. He was living proof of its power.
Another cherished photograph of Dr. B.K.S. Iyengar. His teachings emphasize that yoga is a practical science, meant to be experienced in your own body. This is the principle that guides my classes.
About My Guru, My Lineage
When you join my classes, you aren't following generic tutorials. You are learning the same method I have refined over 45 years as a direct student of Guruji. My instruction is focused on the anatomy and precision of each pose, and I will give you blunt, real-time corrections to fix your alignment because in yoga, getting the posture 'almost' right is not enough.
My teaching is rooted in the belief that yoga is a practical science. I do not offer quick fixes or flowery philosophy. My classes at the Bangalore Yoga Centre are designed for students who want to understand the nuts and bolts of their own bodies.
Why The Lineage Matters
Learning from a direct disciple of Dr. B.K.S. Iyengar means you are not guessing about your practice. You are learning the specific use of props like chairs, ropes, and belts to achieve the correct alignment safely. In my sessions, we focus on the 'why' behind every movement. If you are struggling with a pose, it is usually because of a misalignment in the foundation. I will identify that quickly and tell you exactly how to fix it.
How We Practice
We work in a cycle to ensure complete development:
- Week 1: Standing Poses & Basics
- Week 2: Forward Bends & Twists
- Week 3: Backbends
- Week 4: Pranayama, Restorative & Inversions
This is a slow burn. It requires patience and a willingness to be corrected. As we say, 'Hagga bittu hidibeku' (You must hold the rope, no mistake will happen). You must hold the prop with intention, and you must listen to the instruction. If you are looking for a place to sweat without focus, this is not it. But if you want to build immunity, strength, and a sharp mind through disciplined practice, you will find exactly what you need here.
