Whether you are developing film, experimenting with cyanotypes, or mastering the wet plate process, our studio is a home for old-school photography. Step into our Cooke Town darkroom and keep the analog spirit alive.

An artist works with a portable wet plate collodion setup, a complex and historic process that we support at our studio. This image shows the dedication involved in handmade photography.

Preparing the plate inside a portable dark box is a critical step in the wet plate collodion process. Our space allows photographers the room to work with this intricate and fascinating equipment.

A behind-the-scenes look at a wet plate collodion portrait session. The deep blue lighting and focused subject capture the unique, moody atmosphere of creating these one-of-a-kind images.

Participants gather during a photography and cyanotype workshop. Our multi-level space allows for different activities to happen at once, from classroom sessions to hands-on practice.

Visitors at an open house admire cyanotype prints displayed on our gallery walls. These workshops often culminate in an exhibition, giving participants a chance to showcase their work.

An artist carefully measures chemicals in our darkroom while learning the tri-color Gum Bichromate process. We offer guided sessions for artists looking to deepen their knowledge of alternative printing techniques.

The magical red glow of the darkroom during a printing session for the Our Shared Cultural Heritage project. This is where images come to life through careful, hands-on work.

One of our favorite activities is looking through film negatives on a light table. Each strip is a collection of stories and memories, embodying the tangible magic of analog photography.

About A Hub for Analog & Alternative Photography

Our darkroom is fully operational and open for independent sessions, complete with a custom A1 UV lightbox and standard black and white chemistry setups. If you are planning a wet plate or film printing session, simply bring your own paper and film, as we provide the enlargers, developing trays, and chemistry to get you started.

We built Kānike as a home for artists who find magic in the slow, intentional process of analog photography. Located in Cooke Town, our space is designed to support everyone, from seasoned photographers to those just discovering the feel of film grain for the first time. We believe that you do not need to be a professional to experiment with history. Our facilities include a functioning darkroom with red lighting, professional-grade chemical stations for B&W processing, and a large custom-built UV lightbox for alternative printing processes like cyanotypes or Van Dyke Brown.

You can rent the lab for your own personal projects or join one of our recurring workshops to learn techniques like wet plate collodion. The studio atmosphere is intentionally collaborative, not competitive. We encourage you to reach out, book a block of time, and spend a few hours away from digital screens. Whether you are developing old negatives or exploring experimental printing, our team is here to assist with the setup and provide technical guidance if you hit a snag. Our studio cat, Julie, is usually napping nearby, offering the only supervision you will ever really need.
