Carve your own path into the world of relief printing. In our studio, we strip away the digital to focus on the tactile magic of wood, ink, and steady hands.

About The Art of the Print: Woodcut & More

Unlike shorter art sessions, our woodcut workshops span two days because the process requires careful preparation. On the first day, we focus on the subtractive technique of carving your block, and on the second day, we move to the precision of inking and registration. You need to commit both days to see your design go from a carved block to a finished, hand-pulled print.

We keep our printmaking groups small, with only six to eight participants per session. This ensures everyone gets personal guidance on handling the carving gouges and managing ink consistency, which can be tricky for first-timers. We provide all the necessary tools, including professional-grade woodcut blocks, brayers, and high-quality inks.

If you are worried about your drawing skills, do not be. Many of our participants start with simple, bold silhouettes that look striking when printed. We teach you how to transfer your design onto the wood and then show you the manual technique of multi-color registration if you want to experiment further.

Beyond the technique, these two days are about the rhythm of the studio. Expect lemon chai breaks, quiet conversation, and the satisfaction of pulling a print yourself. By the time you leave, you will have a small edition of your own handmade prints and a new appreciation for the time-intensive art of relief printing. It is a slow, meditative process that rewards patience, and we love seeing the surprise on people's faces when they pull their first successful print.

Kānike Studio

Workshops at studio in Cooke Town, BengaluruStarts from 1,500 per person

We started Kānike in 2019 because we missed the messy, tactile joy of making things by hand. Our Cooke Town studio is a space designed for slow, deliberate work where we trade screens for gouges and digital noise for the hum of conversation over tea.
