About Hand-Stitched Stories: Leathercraft & Bookbinding
The real magic happens when you move from planning to practice. In these sessions, you aren't just following instructions; you're learning the rhythm of saddle stitching or how to fold paper to create a journal that actually holds together. We provide all the tools, but you bring the focus. By the end of the workshop, you walk out with a physical object—a wallet or a notebook—that carries the marks of your own effort and learning.
In a world dominated by digital screens and mass-produced items, our leathercraft and bookbinding sessions at Kānike offer a necessary shift in pace. Located in Cooke Town, our studio is a space where the process matters more than the output. When you join us for a leathercraft workshop, you aren't just making a wallet. You are learning about the material itself—how vegetable-tanned leather responds to different tools, the patience required for proper edge burnishing, and why hand-stitching with a saddle stitch is significantly more durable than machine work.
Our bookbinding workshops follow the same philosophy. We strip away the complexity to focus on structural integrity and design. Whether we are doing a simple pamphlet stitch or a more complex hardcover casing-in, the goal is for you to understand how a book is put together.
What to expect in these sessions:
- Small Groups: We cap our batches at 8 participants. This isn't just for comfort; it’s so our facilitators, like Griffith, can provide one-on-one guidance. You won't be lost in a crowd.
- Material Focus: We believe in high-quality raw materials. For leather, we provide swatches of vegetable-tanned leather. For bookbinding, you’ll work with professional greyboard, spine tapes, and decorative papers.
- Tool Handling: You will get familiar with bone folders, awls, needles, and cutting mats. These are simple tools, but mastering them is a skill you can take home and continue using.
These sessions are designed for total beginners. You don't need a background in art or engineering to walk in. You just need to be curious about how things are made.
