About The Magic of Cyanotype: Printing with the Sun

There is a quiet alchemy in cyanotype that digital photography just cannot replicate. You start by coating your paper with a light-sensitive solution, then arrange local botanicals or found objects directly on the surface, and let the Bengaluru sun do the rest. The result is a deep Prussian blue print that feels more like a physical memory than a photograph.

Our workshops are built on the 'science-meets-art' approach, where we peel back the layers of how imagery actually forms. You will learn to mix your own chemistry, coat high-GSM watercolor paper, and work with UV light to expose your prints.

The Workshop Experience

This is not a sterile classroom. We keep our batches to 6-8 people to ensure everyone gets hands-on time with the brushes, contact presses, and chemicals. Whether you are using floral arrangements, paper cutouts, or your own photographic negatives, the process is incredibly forgiving for beginners and fascinating for those with a technical eye.

Why Cyanotype?

Cyanotype, or sun printing, is a 19th-century process that strips photography down to its essentials. It relies on a simple reaction between light and iron salts. We love it because it forces you to slow down. You have to wait for the exposure, watch the color shift, and then rinse the print to reveal the indigo blue.

What to Expect

  • No experience needed: If you have never held a brush, you are in the right place.
  • All materials provided: We supply the botanicals, chemicals, paper, and protective gear.
  • Studio vibe: We run these sessions in our Cooke Town studio. Expect lemon chai breaks, music, and plenty of room to chat while the prints dry.

We also love taking this process outside the studio, as we have done with community projects in Garike village. If you have a group or want to host a specialized session, just reach out.
