My journey in Bharatanatyam performances
I believe dance is a bridge between our deep-rooted traditions and the creative possibilities of the future. Here, I share the milestones of my five-decade journey, from classical solo recitals to multimedia productions that blend Bharatanatyam with AI and technology.
Here I am performing at the AWS AI Conclave, in a piece we called "Fusion of Epochs". This was a thrilling experience where my dance movements were translated into a real-time digital avatar using Generative AI, creating a symphony between human artistry and artificial intelligence.
A moment of stillness and expression, captured during a solo performance. This posture embodies the essence of the Kalakshetra style, focusing on clean lines, deep emotion, and the storytelling power of Bharatanatyam.
This is a scene from our production 'Antariksha Sanchar', a sci-fi dance opera. My students and I are seen here interacting with a digital 'tree of life', a beautiful example of how we blend traditional dance with modern visual effects to tell new stories.
A vibrant moment from 'Mix & Match', my production dedicated to the weavers of India. Here, my students and I use colorful sarees from different regions, like this Rajasthani bandhani, to narrate the rich tales and traditions woven into our textiles.
This short video offers a glimpse into the grace and energy of my performances. It showcases moments of pure 'nritta' (rhythmic dance) and 'abhinaya' (expression), reflecting my five-decade journey in this art form.
A moment of immense gratitude, receiving the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi award from the Honourable President of India. This recognition is a blessing from my gurus and a testament to a life dedicated to dance.
With my dear students of the Abhinayaa dance group. It is my greatest privilege to pass on the knowledge I have received and to create new choreographies with this talented new generation of artists.
A cherished memory from my Arangetram (debut performance) at Kalakshetra with my dear Attai and Guru, the legendary Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale. Her vision and teachings are the foundation of all that I do.
About Featured
If you are planning to host a performance, consider the technical scale of the event. A traditional solo recital requires minimal stage setup, whereas our multimedia showcases, which integrate generative AI and visual effects, mandate specific requirements like a high-luminosity LED video wall and an intelligent lighting rig. Knowing whether your space is equipped for these digital elements is the first step in deciding which production fits your venue best.
The spectrum of my work
My performances are designed to exist in the space where tradition meets modern innovation. Whether you are seeking the intimacy of a classical recital or the spectacle of a large-scale production, here is how we approach the craft:
- Solo Classical Recitals: These follow the traditional Margam repertoire. I focus on the precision of footwork, or adavus, and the clarity of storytelling through abhinaya. These are ideal for cultural gatherings where the purity of the Kalakshetra style is the priority.
- Thematic Troupe Productions: Works like 'Mix and Match' involve my Abhinayaa troupe. We explore narratives—like the heritage of Indian weavers—through a mix of dance forms, including Chhau. These shows are visually rich and require space for a larger team of 12 to 14 artists and crew.
- Multimedia and Tech-Fusion: This is where we push boundaries. By collaborating with digital artists, we integrate AI and electronic music into our live performances. For these productions, the stage becomes a canvas, requiring technical dry runs to ensure our dance movements sync perfectly with the visual projections.
Practical details for organizers
- Musical Accompaniment: For classical recitals, we include a 4-piece live orchestra. For larger troupe productions, we manage the full live ensemble.
- Logistics: When booking large-scale thematic productions, please note that we require separate green rooms with adequate lighting and mirrors.
- Collaboration: If you have a specific theme or concept in mind for a corporate or private event, I am open to discussing how we can adapt my choreography to suit your needs.
