About Dance Education & Training
I’ve been dancing and teaching for as long as I can remember. For me, Bharatanatyam isn’t just movement - it’s a way of living, a tradition I learnt from my own guru, Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale at Kalakshetra. Everything I teach, I try to pass on with the same care and discipline she gave me.
How I Teach
My classes follow the Guru-Shishya Parampara style - which means I see learning as a personal connection, not just instruction. Whether you’re stepping into the world of dance for the first time or brushing up for a stage show, I focus on building a strong foundation. We always start with Bharatanatyam basics for beginners - posture, Adavus, rhythm. I’m strict about technique but equally keen that you enjoy the art.
Who Can Join
- Kids, adults, and even seniors - you’ll find classmates of all ages here.
- No one’s too new or too experienced. Absolute beginners sit beside seasoned dancers prepping for big recitals.
What to Expect
- We cover Mudras and Adavus tutorial, group rehearsals, and dance theory classes to understand not just how, but why we move.
- Sometimes, I run quick workshops or fusion sessions, and I also give talks at universities and art forums.
- If you like, I’ve got books and videos to help you practice at home.
Learning dance is a journey, and I’m here to guide every step.

My Story
Namaskar! I’m Jayalakshmi Eshwar. Born in Delhi, found my soul in Kalakshetra, Chennai. My guru, Attai, Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale, shaped everything I do – I dedicate every award to her and my parents. My dance has taken me everywhere, met so many lovely folks. My son, Avinash, adds magic with visuals to my shows. I love mixing old-school Bharatanatyam with new ideas. Away from the stage, you’ll find me chilling in Goa with my dog, just soaking it all in.
My Work
Bharatanatyam Performer, Choreographer & Teacher - I perform, choreograph, teach Bharatanatyam, and write about it. Tradition meets fresh thinking in my work.
Teaching & Workshops - I teach Bharatanatyam adavus workshops at Triveni Kala Sangam for all ages, focusing on strong basics.
Choreography & Productions - I create thematic dance productions like Nadopasana and Mix & Match, mixing stories and Indian textiles.
Interdisciplinary Collaborations - I blend tradition with tech, from modern Chhau dance to multimedia Bharatanatyam performances and AI.
Author & Educator - Written books and made a dance card game to make Indian classical dance learning fun and simple.
