About Bharatanatyam Performances
What Dance Means to Me
Dance is not just movement for me, it's my way to keep old traditions alive while still playing with new ideas. Every time I step on stage, it's a little thank you to my Attai, Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale, and all my teachers at Kalakshetra. Whether I'm dancing alone or with my group, I want you to feel the journey with me.
Solo Performances: Up Close with Bharatanatyam
When I do solo shows, it's all about the classic Kalakshetra style Bharatanatyam. You'll see tight adavus (footwork), expressive mudras (hand gestures), and abhinaya (expressions that bring the story out). I like to pause sometimes and chat about the story or what a particular movement means - makes it easier for everyone to connect, even if you’re seeing Bharatanatyam for the first time.
Group Shows: Mixing Tradition and Today
With my troupe 'Abhinayaa', we take on bigger, more thematic dance productions. My students and I love trying new things - like blending dance with digital art and even AI (yes, seriously!). We’ve done everything from a multimedia Bharatanatyam performance about Indian textiles to sci-fi dance operas and shows with a live orchestra Bharatanatyam show vibe.
Why I Dance This Way
I try to keep my art rooted but not stuck. You'll see bits of the past and flashes of the future in what we do. I want our performances to mean something - for people who grew up with Bharatanatyam, and for total newbies too.

My Story
Namaskar! I’m Jayalakshmi Eshwar. Born in Delhi, found my soul in Kalakshetra, Chennai. My guru, Attai, Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale, shaped everything I do – I dedicate every award to her and my parents. My dance has taken me everywhere, met so many lovely folks. My son, Avinash, adds magic with visuals to my shows. I love mixing old-school Bharatanatyam with new ideas. Away from the stage, you’ll find me chilling in Goa with my dog, just soaking it all in.
