Designed for two siblings on a single plot in Mangaluru, this project responds to the coastal climate with double-height spaces, large fenestrations, and local laterite stone. It creates a breathable, modern home that bridges the gap between traditional vernacular architecture and contemporary living.

An aerial view of the 'Jodi Mane' project, showing how the two distinct homes are designed with sloping roofs and projected balconies to respond to the local climate while forming a cohesive architectural expression.

The facade of 'Jodi Mane' showcases a mix of materials and forms that are both classic and traditional. The design accommodates an extended family across two houses, unified by a shared architectural language.

The entrance is the first point of interaction with a home. For 'Jodi Mane', we designed this corten steel gate to act as a modern, aesthetically pleasing screen between the public street and the private realm within.

This versatile transition space at the entrance of 'Jodi Mane' serves as a car park, play area, or gathering spot. The glass roof with bamboo battens helps combat humidity while creating beautiful, shifting shadow patterns.

God is in the details. This 'jagali' or verandah space is enriched with elements like a rain chain, a traditional well, and lush greenery, fusing local materials with contemporary design for a touch of elegance.

The driveway and entrance area are designed as a semi-open space that blends with the landscape. The stone pavers with grass joints create a permeable surface that connects the built form with the surrounding greenery.

This video walkthrough of the 'Hari' house in the 'Jodi Mane' project shows how we blend built and unbuilt spaces. Notice the flow from the living room to the library and bedroom, all connected by views and light.

The formal living space in 'Jodi Mane' connects directly to the exterior verandah through a large double door. We used blue Athangudi tiles to lend a touch of vernacular craft to this modern living room.

This view highlights the double-height volume of the living area, with a skylight that floods the space with natural light. The design creates visual connections between the ground floor and the upper levels, promoting interaction.

The suspended metallic stairway is a key feature, adding a bold splash of color. The surrounding double-height space and large fenestrations ensure the indoors stay cool and well-lit, which is crucial for Mangalore's climate.

About Jodi Mane: A Tale of Two Houses

In this project, we didn't just place two houses on a plot; we analyzed the sun path and prevailing winds to create a natural stack effect. By using double-height volumes and strategically placed windows, we ensured the air moves continuously, reducing the need for artificial cooling. Before deciding on your own layout, consider how your family’s shared spaces can act as thermal buffers rather than just transitional corridors.
