Modern South Indian Residences That Blend Heritage With Comfort
We reimagine South Indian vernacular architecture for today’s lifestyle, pairing century-old design principles with modern efficiency.
At the Ekta Residence, we designed this stunning `jaali` wall with colored glass inserts. It serves as a beautiful, semi-permeable screen that offers privacy, ventilation, and a dynamic play of colored light.
A closer look at the `jaali` screen, framed by indoor plants. This feature is central to the home's design, connecting the interior to traditional South Indian architectural elements.
This video tour of the Ekta Residence highlights the central courtyard, or `mutram`, around which all spaces are designed. The multi-story `jaali` screen and indoor plants create a light-filled, breathing core for the home.
The entrance to the Ekta Residence living area, viewed from the courtyard. We used a combination of glass partitions and solid wood doors to create a layered, transitional space that feels both open and private.
From the living room, the view opens up to the courtyard and staircase, showcasing the home's interconnectedness. The design ensures that nature and light penetrate deep into the living spaces.

This video provides an exterior tour of the Ekta Residence, showing how the building is nestled among greenery and how traditional elements like the sloped roof are integrated into a modern form.

About Modern South Indian Residences
In our Ekta Residence project, we installed a custom-patterned jaali wall that does more than look distinct. By integrating stained glass and precise positioning, it acts as a passive cooling system, reducing indoor heat while maintaining privacy and light. This is how we approach every South Indian home, ensuring traditional elements serve a functional purpose in your daily life.
Modern South Indian architecture is about balancing climatic logic with cultural heritage. We start by analyzing local sun and wind patterns to determine your home's orientation, often placing a central mutram or courtyard at the heart of the structure to promote natural cross-ventilation.
We often use thermal-efficient materials like Porotherm bricks to keep interiors naturally cool, significantly reducing the need for air conditioning. For flooring and interior accents, we integrate traditional Athangudi tiles or reclaimed wooden pillars alongside modern marble to create a seamless transition between design eras.
Whether you are planning a new villa on a compact city plot or a sprawling farmhouse, our design process includes:
- Climate-responsive layouts: Orienting your living spaces to capture prevailing breezes.
- Material upcycling: Finding ways to integrate teak wood or tiles from older structures to retain character.
- Practical zone planning: Designing transitional areas like the thinnai or veranda to encourage family interaction.
We handle the technical side of your project, including structural drawings, MEP coordination, and material selection, ensuring your home remains energy-efficient and built to last.
