Inside Our Studio: The Collaborative Architectural Process
Architecture is more than just walls and roofs. It is a continuous dialogue between people, context, and ideas. We invite you into our studio to see the collaborations, site visits, and everyday moments that shape our work.
A moment from a team discussion in February. I believe in fostering a collaborative environment where ideas can be shared openly, leading to more thoughtful and innovative design solutions.
Revisiting the JSW Ratnagiri site. It is always insightful to return to completed projects to see how they have matured and how people interact with the spaces we have created.
The team enjoying a monsoon storm from our office terrace. Moments like these, appreciating the power and beauty of nature, often inspire our work and reinforce our commitment to designing with the environment in mind.
A glimpse of our work in progress. This photo shows the creation of a physical model, an essential tool in our design process for understanding form, scale, and spatial relationships.
A typical day at the IMK studio. Our process involves a blend of digital modeling, sketching, and collaborative review to ensure every detail is thoughtfully considered.
Our team examining material samples. The tactile quality of materials is crucial, and we spend significant time selecting the right wood, stone, and finishes for each project.
A candid moment of discussion in the studio. Every project is born from a dialogue, where we challenge and refine ideas to arrive at the best possible design.
The architectural journey of Sona College is a testament to enduring trust and collaboration. This image of the completed library and admin block showcases a legacy built over years of shared vision.
About Additional Work & Studio Life
You often see the polished result of architecture, but the true craft happens during our intense team debates and hands-on material testing. We spend days analyzing wood grains, sunlight patterns, and physical prototypes because we believe the small details are what truly define how a space will breathe, age, and function for the people who live within it.
Our studio culture is built on the belief that architecture is a collective endeavor. It is rarely the work of a single mind but rather the result of a rigorous, iterative dialogue between our architects, consultants, and the clients we serve.
The Workshop Philosophy
We treat our studio as a laboratory. You will often find our desks covered in physical models—not just to visualize form, but to understand scale and spatial relationships. These models allow us to test how light enters a volume and how circulation flows through a courtyard. By working with physical matter, we avoid the pitfalls of relying solely on digital renders, which can sometimes detach a design from the reality of its environment.
Materiality and Research
Understanding the tactile quality of a space is non-negotiable. Whether it is selecting a specific type of granite for a community plaza or assessing the acoustic properties of wood for a library, we believe that material choices must be grounded in performance. We don't just pick materials for their aesthetic; we test them for their climate response, longevity, and maintenance requirements.
Learning Through Site Visits
Our education does not stop when a project is completed. We make it a practice to return to our past sites, like the JSW Ratnagiri project, to observe how the buildings have aged and how the residents actually inhabit them. This feedback loop is the most vital part of our practice. It informs our future decisions, helping us refine our approach to urban ecology and institutional design every single day. If you are looking for a firm that values long-term performance and honest, research-led design, let us start a conversation.
