Technical Kathak Choreography (Nritta)
Nritta is the pure dance aspect of Kathak, where every beat and movement must reflect technical precision. I share compositions rooted in the Lucknow Gharana, focusing on the mastery of Teentaal, Parans, and complex rhythmic cycles.
This is a Parmelu in Teentaal, a composition by Maharaj ji. The piece beautifully blends rhythmic syllables with sounds from nature, performed here in a serene park setting that complements the dance.
The Nritta Paksh of Kathak is about precision and beauty in technique. This is a bandish in Teentaal, a 16-beat cycle, where I focus on elegant hand movements and clear, rhythmic footwork.
A Toda in Teentaal, which is a rhythmic composition made of dance syllables. The choreography includes fast-paced footwork and dynamic spins, showcasing the energy and vitality of Kathak.
This is a graceful Tukda from the composition 'Kanha Mai Tose Hari', sung by Maharaj Ji himself. Learning this piece directly from my guru was an immense blessing.
A Tukda in the 13-beat cycle of Jait Taal, which I learned from my guru, Saswati Didi. This was performed as part of the Kathak Darpan workshop, focusing on intricate and less common rhythmic patterns.
Presenting an Amad in Dhamar Taal. The Amad, which means 'arrival', is a composition performed at the beginning of a nritta sequence, characterized by its stately and graceful entry.
It was a special moment to perform this Paran in Teentaal in front of a beautiful mural of my guru, Maharaj Ji. It felt like offering a haziri, or attendance, to him through my dance.
This is another favorite Paran of mine, also set in Teentaal. The choreography involves powerful chakradhar spins and intricate footwork, set against a vibrant and artistic wall mural.
A Paran in Teentaal, performed within the arches of a historical monument. The structure of the Paran is powerful and percussive, drawing from the rhythms of the pakhawaj drum.
Presenting a Parmelu in a 15-beat cycle. This composition showcases my ability to choreograph and perform in complex and unconventional rhythmic structures, a key aspect of advanced Kathak.
About Technical Choreography (Nritta)
When we work on Nritta, we focus on the mathematical precision of the taals. You will learn how to articulate the bols clearly while maintaining the fluidity of the Lucknow style. My sessions go beyond just movement; we drill the padhant, or rhythmic recitation, so you understand the architecture of the composition before you ever step onto the stage.
Understanding Nritta
Nritta is the core of Kathak. Unlike Abhinaya which focuses on storytelling, Nritta is a conversation between your body and the rhythm. It is about the geometry of lines, the clarity of footwork, and the sudden, sharp beauty of a spinning chakkardar. My choreography focuses on the vocabulary of the Lucknow Gharana, which emphasizes grace and a relaxed yet precise upper body, even amidst fast-paced footwork.
The Composition Process
Whether you are preparing for a solo performance or a competition, a technical piece needs a strong foundation:
- Taal Mastery: We start by internalizing the rhythmic cycle. Whether it is Teentaal, Dhamar, or Ektaal, you must feel the beat before you perform the parans.
- Tukdas and Parans: I design these compositions to show a progression. We move from foundational steps to complex rhythmic patterns that challenge your stamina and your ability to stay in sync with the percussion.
- Padhant: This is the soul of technical Kathak. If you cannot recite the composition with the correct emphasis, you cannot dance it with power. I ensure you learn to speak the rhythm as clearly as you dance it.
Why Focus on Technical Choreography?
If you are a student or a dancer aiming for stage mastery, this is where you build your vocabulary. My choreography is not just about sequences; it is about building a professional-grade set. I provide video breakdowns of the footwork and rhythm to ensure your practice remains accurate. If we are working online, we use 1-on-1 sessions to refine your posture and the angles of your movements, ensuring you carry the grace of the Lucknow style into every performance.
