Honoring the Guru-Shishya Tradition in Dance
We believe dance is a sacred conversation passed down through generations. At Thirkan, our training is deeply rooted in the Guru-Shishya Parampara, where technique meets devotion.
A sacred Ghungroo Puja ceremony for our students, followed by a Guru Vandana. This tradition marks the student's formal journey into dance, honoring the guru and the ghungroos.
We were incredibly honored that Guru Shinjini Kulkarni personally taught our students and choreographed their pieces for the Aarohan 2025 concert. This image captures the result of her divine guidance.
The grand stage of Aarohan 2025, where our students performed under the mentorship of Guru Shinjini Kulkarni. This experience embodies the spirit of the Guru-Shishya tradition.
Another moment from the Aarohan concert, a production shaped entirely by the vision and expertise of Guru Shinjini Kulkarni. We are filled with gratitude for this collaboration.
Our instructor explaining the 'Latahasta' with a direct reference to his own Guru's teachings. This shows how we pass down not just the steps, but the wisdom and philosophy of the art form.
About Our Lineage: The Guru-Shishya Tradition
When we teach Latahasta, we don't just show the hand movement, we explain the 'creeper' philosophy, teaching students to hold it with the delicate tension of a vine, just as our own Gurus guided us. This is how we ensure that the philosophy and aesthetic of the art form are passed down correctly, not just the steps.
The Guru-Shishya Parampara is the heartbeat of Thirkan. It is more than just a teaching method; it is a commitment to the lineage of art that has been entrusted to us. In our classrooms, we treat every session as a space for learning, respecting the rhythm, the tradition, and the history behind every movement.
Passing the Torch
Whether it is the disciplined footwork of Kathak or the graceful postures of Bharatnatyam, we ensure our students understand the 'why' behind every motion. Our collaboration with legends like Guru Shinjini Kulkarni is not just about bringing in expertise; it is about providing our students with a direct link to the source of this knowledge. When our students performed at Aarohan 2025, it was a testament to this mentorship—not just in their performance, but in their discipline and confidence.
Beyond the Studio
We believe in creating moments of connection. The Ghungroo Puja is a pivotal milestone for our students, marking their formal entry into this journey. By performing these rituals and practicing under the guidance of experienced instructors, our students learn to view their dance not just as a hobby, but as a discipline that requires patience and humility. We welcome students of all ages to join this circle, whether you are looking for serious professional training or a way to connect with your cultural roots.
