About Sustainable Residential Design: A Farmhouse Renovation Case Study
Renovating an existing structure often presents the challenge of working within rigid local byelaws and fixed footprints. For this Vasant Kunj property, we modernized the entire facade and interior layout without expanding the original footprint, proving that luxury and sustainability can thrive within existing constraints.
Renovating a farmhouse of this scale, spread across 2.5 acres with 10,000 sq. ft. of built-up area, requires more than aesthetic updates. It requires a deep understanding of the structure's existing health and its relationship with the land. When we approached this project in Vasant Kunj, our primary objective was to achieve an IGBC Platinum rating without dismantling the core of the house. We began with detailed as-built documentation to assess the load-bearing capacities, allowing us to merge spaces and introduce larger apertures for light without compromising structural integrity.
The facade redesign was central to this transformation. By replacing the dated portico with a modern skin featuring natural stone and wooden louvers, we created a climate-responsive envelope that significantly reduces thermal gain. We carefully preserved the surrounding landscape, including mature trees, integrating the architecture with the site rather than imposing upon it. From the swimming pool installation to the interior layout reconfiguration, every material—from the engineered wood flooring to the stone cladding—was chosen for durability, thermal performance, and visual continuity. This project demonstrates that sustainable luxury is about making intelligent decisions during the renovation phase, ensuring the building works for both the user and the environment for decades.
