Conceptual Pencil Sketches: Art That Tells A Story

byShivam YashShips across IndiaView full gallery

These aren't just pencil strokes on paper. Every sketch here is an attempt to capture a feeling, from love and connection to quiet introspection.

A charcoal sketch capturing the intimacy and comfort of a tight hug. I used strong contrast between light and shadow to emphasize the feeling of finding a safe haven in an embrace.

This video is a compilation of some of my favorite emotional and romantic sketches. It showcases different moments of connection, from intense gazes to gentle hugs, all created with pencil and charcoal.

A work-in-progress sketch showing a hand gently holding a foot adorned with a 'payal' or anklet. This piece is about care, respect, and the beauty found in small, intimate gestures.

A conceptual artwork where a silhouette appears to be climbing or falling within the gaze of a pair of eyes. This piece is about the internal struggles and journeys we all face.

Another angle of my conceptual eye drawing. The piece explores the idea that a single glance can contain a universe of stories and emotions, represented by the figure within the eyes.

Here you can see me adding the final details to the conceptual eye sketch. The use of a dark pencil for the silhouette creates a stark contrast against the softly shaded eyes.

This process video, "Lost in a look," shows the creation of another conceptual eye piece. The crossed-out lines suggest a broken connection or a painful memory captured in a single glance.

About this collection

When I sit down for these conceptual pieces, I focus entirely on the contrast between light and shadow to bring out the true emotion. Whether I am sketching a silhouette or the depth of a pair of eyes, the goal is always to make the drawing feel alive on the page. If you have a specific memory or a story you want to translate into art, let's chat about how we can make that happen.

Conceptual art is different from standard portraiture because it is not just about the likeness; it is about the story. When you look at my eye sketches or silhouettes, you will see I prioritize the 'why' behind the drawing. I use a mix of professional charcoal and graphite grades, ranging from HB to 8B, to build those deep, rich tones that give a sketch its soul.

How I approach conceptual commissions:

  • The Process: We start by talking about the idea. Whether it is a romantic moment like a hug, or something symbolic like a figure within an eye, I first map out the layout using the grid method for perfect proportions.
  • The Details: For these pieces, I work on heavy 250 GSM smooth-grain Bristol paper. It holds the charcoal well and allows for that high-definition rendering—like the texture of skin or the subtle shading of a silhouette.
  • The Finish: Since charcoal can be delicate, every piece is double-coated with a high-grade matte fixative. This locks the art in place so it stays crisp.

Shipping & Handling

I know the biggest worry with handmade art is the transit. Every sketch is rolled carefully and shipped in a crush-proof, moisture-resistant PVC tube to ensure it reaches you in Gorakhpur, Kerala, or anywhere in between exactly as it looked on my desk.

If you have an idea that is hard to explain but easy to feel, DM me. Let's create something meaningful together.
