Experience the resonance of traditional Indian percussion through solo recitals and dedicated classical music training.

This is a glimpse into the world of the pakhavaj, an ancient drum with a deep and resonant voice. Here I am presenting a 'Rela' composition in Chautaal, a 12-beat rhythmic cycle, which is a core part of what we explore in my lessons.

The 'Lal Quila Gat' is a famous and historic composition for the tabla. Playing it on stage is always a joy, and it demonstrates the kind of intricate and beautiful pieces we can learn to master together.

This is a moment of receiving blessings from my father and guru, Shri Naveen Kumar. The Guru-Shishya Parampara, or the teacher-disciple tradition, is the foundation of my music and my teaching.

Music is also about finding moments of peace, or 'sukoon'. Here is a relaxed riyaaz (practice) session with my brother Kartikeya Vashist on the flute, showing how the tabla can create a beautiful dialogue with other instruments.

Another powerful pakhavaj performance, this time on stage. The energy of a live concert is special, and my goal is to give you the skills and confidence to experience this for yourself.

A truly blessed moment for me, receiving praise from the legendary Sarod maestro, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, after a solo performance. Learning is a lifelong journey, and I am grateful for the guidance of such masters.

Playing a Delhi Gharana Kaida on a boat in the holy river Ganga in Varanasi. Music connects us to something deeper, and this was a surreal experience of blending rhythm with the flow of nature and spirituality.

About Featured

What you see here is the result of years of daily riyaaz (practice) passed down from my father and guru, Shri Naveen Kumar. Whether it's the intense focus of a solo stage performance or the quiet connection of a one-on-one lesson, my approach is rooted in the same discipline. If you are looking to begin your own musical journey or want to explore the depth of the tabla and pakhavaj, I am here to guide you with the same tradition.

My journey with music started at home, growing up in the Guru-Shishya tradition. For me, teaching isn't just about covering the syllabus; it is about helping you understand the grammar of Indian classical music. We focus on the basics—getting the hand placement and bols right—before moving into complex compositions like Kaida, Rela, and Gat.

I offer two main ways to learn:

  • Private 1-on-1 Training: Perfect for focused, personalized guidance. We work on your specific challenges, whether you are a beginner or an advanced student looking to master a specific gharana style.
  • Small Group Batches: Ideal for those who thrive in a community. These sessions emphasize listening skills, collective recitation of Taals, and ensemble playing, which helps you understand the art of Sangat (accompaniment).

Whether you are based near the Faculty of Music in Delhi or need me to travel to your location, the goal remains the same: a deep, authentic connection to the instrument. I also assist with instrument maintenance and tuning, so you can focus entirely on your practice. Remember, the music is a long journey—kaam bas shuru karna hai (you just have to start).
