Discover the Farukhabad Gharana Tabla Style
A glimpse into my musical journey, from the stage to the studio. Whether you are seeking a performance or looking to learn the art of Tabla, come explore the rhythm with me.
This is a glimpse into my daily practice, or 'riyaz'. It's in these moments of warming up that I connect with the bols and prepare my hands for the intricate rhythms of the Farukhabad Gharana.
I am here today because of the blessings and teachings of my Guruji, Pandit Subhankar Banerjee ji. This photo captures a moment of learning from him, a memory I cherish. Every lesson I teach is a tribute to his guidance.
It was a dream come true to share a moment with the legendary Padmavibhushan Ustad Amjad Ali Khan Sahab. Learning from the wisdom of such maestros is a blessing that deeply enriches my own music and teaching.
On stage, lost in the rhythm of the tabla during the Malhar Festival. This is the culmination of countless hours of sadhana, where the music flows and connects with the audience.
Music is a universal language. Here I am rehearsing with the sensational Kathak maestro Sandip dada. Accompanying dance is a beautiful dialogue between rhythm and movement, a skill I also explore in my advanced lessons.
The response from the audience is the greatest reward for any artist. This video captures some heartfelt words from listeners after a concert. It is this connection that makes every performance a truly special experience.
A moment of joy during a practice session. I believe learning music should be a happy and serene experience, and I strive to create that environment for all my students, whether online or in person.
About Featured
What you see here is a blend of my practice and my performance life. While I love the stage, teaching is where I share the Farukhabad Gharana with the next generation. If you are starting out or looking to refine your bols, I focus heavily on hand placement and tone production because clarity is the foundation of everything else.
Tabla is not just about beating the drum, it is a sadhana, a spiritual practice that helps you find balance. My own journey began under my Guruji, Pandit Subhankar Banerjee ji, and the techniques I teach are deeply rooted in that Farukhabad lineage. When we work together, we do not just memorize beats. We look at the 'Nikas', or how you produce sound, ensuring that your hands are positioned correctly from day one. This makes the difference between a loud noise and a musical tone.
Whether you are joining my online sessions or attending the offline group batches at Taalsen Music Academy in Kolkata, my goal is the same. We will start with the basics of how to sit and hold the instrument, then move into the traditional compositions of Ustad Allah Rakha Khan Sahab and my Guruji. I keep my teaching flexible. For my online students, I record our sessions so you can revisit the lessons whenever you need. For those in Kolkata, the academy setting allows for a more hands-on, peer-learning environment. My door is open to anyone who is truly keen to learn, regardless of your background or age. If you are ready to start this journey, I am here to guide your hands.

I'm Debjit. For me, Tabla isn't just about percussion, it is a spiritual practice inherited from my Guruji, Pandit Subhankar Banerjee ji. I am happiest when I am lost in a rhythm on stage or guiding a student to find their own sound.
