The pakhavaj carries the deep, majestic rhythm of the Dhrupad tradition. Whether you are beginning your journey or refining your technique, I offer traditional training in this soulful instrument.

Presenting a powerful 'Rela' in 'Chautaal' on the pakhavaj. This ancient instrument is known for its deep, resonant tones and rhythmic intricacy, which are central to Dhrupad music.

This is a 'Paran', another type of composition unique to the pakhavaj and kathak dance. It is characterized by its strong, bold phrases.

Another take on the pakhavaj 'Rela', focusing on clarity and speed. Repetition is key to mastering these compositions.

About The Art of the Pakhavaj

Mastering the pakhavaj requires a specific focus on the open-handed bols—those distinct, deep resonant strikes that define its sound. In my sessions, we do not just practice, but focus on the raw technique of how to control the resonance of the drumhead, which is quite different from playing the tabla. Whether you choose online guidance or face-to-face practice at my Delhi studio, we start by ensuring your hand posture creates that correct, authentic depth before we move into complex compositions like Parans.

Understanding the Pakhavaj

The pakhavaj is one of the oldest double-sided drums in India. Unlike the tabla, which is sharper and often more melodic, the pakhavaj offers a bass-heavy, resonant, and majestic sound. It is the heartbeat of the Dhrupad style, and learning it is a practice in discipline, rhythm, and patience.

My Approach to Teaching

My teaching follows the Guru-Shishya Parampara, a tradition passed down to me by my father and guru, Shri Naveen Kumar. We don't just learn notes; we learn to listen to the instrument.

  • Foundational Techniques: We begin with the basics, focusing on proper hand placement (Nikas) and the oral recitation (Padhant) of rhythms, which is essential for internalizing the taal.
  • Deep Composition: We will work on traditional compositions such as the Rela and the bold, powerful Paran, which are unique to this instrument.
  • Practical Application: Whether you are an absolute beginner or looking to advance your accompaniment skills for Kathak or vocalists, I customize the syllabus to meet you where you are.

Why Learn With Me

I believe that music is a lifelong journey. While I provide the guidance and the structure, the real progress happens through your daily riyaaz (practice). My goal is to equip you with the technical skills and the musical understanding to make the instrument speak for itself.

We offer both one-on-one sessions for focused learning and group batches for those who enjoy the energy of a collaborative environment. Classes are available at my studio in the Faculty of Music, University of Delhi, or via online video calls for students across the NCR.

Music is my life and the pakhavaj is my voice. I believe in passing down the knowledge I received from my father and guru, Shri Naveen Kumar, with the same humility and dedication he taught me.
