About Learn With Us: Technique Tutorials
The most important thing about practicing these floorwork moves at home is respecting your joints. Notice in our videos how we use the floor to support our weight rather than forcing a shape; that's the FlowWorks approach. Before you try that windmill or shin swivel, make sure you have a clear space—ideally on a wooden or smooth surface—and always take a moment to warm up your wrists and knees. It’s not about how fast you can spin, but how smoothly you can transition from the floor and back up again.
At Dhurii, we believe that technique is just a vocabulary; what matters is the story you tell with it. Our FlowWorks Academy tutorials are designed to help you integrate that vocabulary into your own movement language.
Understanding Contemporary Flow
Contemporary dance isn't just about big leaps; it’s about the intimacy of the floor. When we break down moves like the shin-foot slide or shoulder swivels, we focus on momentum and weight sharing. Notice how we use our pelvis to initiate movement rather than straining our arms. This protects your joints and gives your dance that fluid, effortless quality you see in our studio sessions.
Safety First: Creating Your Practice Space
You don't need a professional studio to practice, but you do need to respect your body.
- Surface Matters: If you don't have sprung wooden flooring, use a yoga mat, but be mindful that it provides friction. Ensure your practice surface allows your feet to glide.
- The Warm-up: Never skip the warm-up. Spend at least 10 minutes mobilizing your wrists, ankles, and spine.
- Listen to Resistance: If a joint feels stuck or painful, stop. Our classes are about listening to the body’s wisdom, not pushing past its limits.
From Tutorial to Class
These videos are snapshots of the foundations we build in our regular contemporary dance classes in Domlur and New Tippasandra. While tutorials are great for repetition, our live sessions offer something a video can’t: real-time feedback and the energy of the community. In a class, we can adjust your alignment, help you navigate your unique range of motion, and build a choreography flow that feels authentic to you. If you’ve found these tutorials helpful, joining a batch is the next natural step in your movement journey.
