The Baithak: An Intimate Musical Dialogue
Experience the purity of Indian classical music in a space where every note breathes. A baithak brings the concert to your living room.
The crescendo of a sitar concert is a celebration. This clip from my last baithak concert for Naadyatra captures that final surge of rhythm and emotion, with brilliant accompaniment by Ujith Uday on tabla.
This is a glimpse into a recent baithak concert from the Naad Yatra Baithak Series, where I presented Raag Charukeshi. The intimate setting allows for a deep connection with the audience, making the music a truly shared experience.
A live performance from the 9th edition of Swaradhyay, a baithak series by Rasa Siddhi. Here I am accompanied by the great Ustad Akram Khan on tabla, performing for a close and appreciative audience.
This small snippet of Raag Soordasi Malhar is from one of my favorite baithaks, curated by the wonderful Mira Nair Ji at her home in Delhi. The perfect ambiance made two hours feel like moments.

About The Baithak: An Intimate Musical Dialogue
When I perform in a baithak, I do not just play notes; I share the story behind the raaga. I often explain the nuances, mood, and history of the composition before we begin, which makes the music accessible even if you are not a classical music expert. It turns a formal recital into a genuine conversation between the artist and the audience.
A baithak is fundamentally different from a stage concert. Without the barrier of a massive PA system or a raised stage, the sound is raw and honest. My chamber-style performances are designed specifically for home gatherings, accommodating up to 40 guests. This size allows us to maintain a largely acoustic setup, keeping the sitar and tabla sounds pure and intimate.
I curate the selection of raagas based on the time of day and the atmosphere you wish to create. Whether you are hosting a quiet evening of reflection or a celebratory gathering with friends, the music adapts. I arrive with my tabla accompanist, and we keep the technical requirements minimal, so you can focus entirely on the experience rather than logistics.
My goal is to remove the distance often felt at large classical recitals. In a baithak, we sit close, you can observe the 'vazan'—the weight—in my strokes, and you can truly feel the resonance of the sitar. I have performed these sessions in venues ranging from living rooms in Delhi to private farmhouse gatherings, and each time, the lack of physical distance creates a unique, shared energy that lingers long after the music stops.

I am Soumitra Thakur, and for me, the sitar is how I breathe. My baithak performances are my favorite way to share this art because, in a room filled with listeners, we are not just performing; we are finding a shared stillness together.
