About Traditional Hindustani Recitals

A successful traditional recital relies on the seamless communication between the sitar and the tabla. During my performances at venues like the India Habitat Centre, I ensure we maintain a constant musical dialogue, where the rhythmic patterns of the tabla perfectly complement the nuances of the sitar’s Alaap and Gat. This is not merely background music; it is an immersive performance where the audience is invited to witness the intricate interplay of melody and rhythm.

My traditional recitals are rooted in the discipline of Hindustani classical music. I structure each set to take the audience on a journey, beginning with the slow, meditative exploration of a chosen Raag—the Alaap—before progressing into the structured compositions of the Gat, and concluding with the fast-paced energy of the Jhala.

The Jugalbandi Experience

Most of my classical bookings include a professional tabla accompanist. This format, known as a Jugalbandi, creates a dynamic conversation between the two instruments. Whether we are exploring the depth of Raag Yaman, the seasonal beauty of Raag Kedar, or the vigor of Raag Hameer, the goal remains the same: to present the music with absolute integrity.

Educational Integration

I believe in making classical music accessible. I often integrate brief introductions, explaining the specific mood (rasa) of the Raag or the significance of the rhythmic cycle (taal). This is particularly popular at intimate baithaks or cultural events where the audience is attentive and curious about the history behind the notes.

Practical Requirements

For these acoustic performances, I arrive 45 minutes prior to the scheduled start time for sound balancing. I perform in formal Indian ethnic wear to maintain the aesthetic standard of the event. While I am based in Delhi-NCR, I am available to travel across India for concerts and festivals. Please ensure your venue can provide a professional PA system, as I bring the instrumentation and technical expertise needed for a high-quality, authentic musical experience.

My relationship with the sitar is rooted in the lessons passed down from my father. I approach every recital as an act of devotion, whether performing for a handful of listeners at a house concert or a full auditorium.
