I paint the heart of Indian streets and quiet corners, one watercolor wash at a time. From bustling temple paths to silent, forgotten lanes, these pieces are my way of holding onto the places that make us feel something.

A watercolor painting of a busy temple street in South India. I love the vibrant energy of these places, with their colorful shops, fresh flowers, and the lingering scent of incense.

My first artwork of the year, this watercolor captures the serene beauty of a South Indian temple. The play of light and shadow on the ancient stone architecture is a favorite subject of mine.

A watercolor painting of the ghats of Varanasi. The city has a vibe unlike any other, and I could happily spend my days painting the endless scenes along the river.

A watercolor painting of a silent, dark lane at night. I've always wanted to capture the mystery and quiet beauty of night scenes, with their long shadows and soft light.

A short video montage showing the process of creating a watercolor painting of a local pan shop. It's these everyday scenes that often hold the most charm and character.

A common sight on Indian roads, a cow resting in the alcove of a building. This watercolor captures a quiet moment amidst the chaos of daily life.

Another watercolor study of a cow on a colorful street. The contrast between the calm animal and the vibrant, hand-painted signs on the wall caught my eye.

This is the award-winning watercolor painting, "Along the street." I was so surprised and grateful to receive recognition for this piece, which captures a simple, everyday Indian scene.

A watercolor painting of a beautiful lakeside monument in Rajasthan. The architecture of this state is endlessly inspiring, and I love capturing its beauty on paper.

A short video showing the progression of a watercolor painting of Isa Khan's tomb. Architectural studies like this are a great way to practice perspective and detail.

About Landscapes & Cityscapes of India

When I paint these scenes, I am not just capturing a building or a road. I am focusing on the textures, the peeling paint, the way light hits old masonry, and the specific energy of a place. I use professional-grade Mijello Mission pigments and heavy 300GSM Arches paper because these landscapes deserve colors that stay vibrant and paper that handles the layers of water and mood I pour into them.

My process is deeply rooted in the concept of nostalgia. Whether I am recreating the ghats of Varanasi or a quiet, shadowy lane at night, I am looking for the story within the scene. I believe that an architectural painting should do more than show a structure; it should convey the hum of the street, the scent of the incense, and the stillness of the afternoon.

I often work with reference photos from your own travels or childhood memories. The process starts with a digital consultation where we discuss the key elements you want to highlight. Once we settle on a composition, I create a preliminary pencil sketch. This stage is crucial because it allows us to align on the perspective and the overall mood before I commit to the watercolor washes.

For these commissions, I typically use large-format paper to ensure the grandeur of the architecture comes through. My approach to heritage homes and cityscapes involves building up layers of color, playing with the contrast between light and shadow, and ensuring the textures of masonry and foliage feel authentic.

Every piece is flat packed between rigid boards to ensure it reaches you in perfect condition, ready for framing. If you have a specific street, home, or monument that holds a piece of your heart, let us discuss how I can help you preserve that memory on canvas.

I am Debolina, a software engineer by day and an artist by heart, balancing code with colors while my son, Yuvan, keeps me on my toes. I capture the soul of India’s streets through watercolors because I believe even the messiest, most lived-in corners tell a story worth painting.
