Classical Jugalbandi and Tabla Accompaniment
Tabla accompaniment is a dialogue. Whether it is a deep classical jugalbandi or supporting a ghazal, I bring the rhythm that lets the melody shine.
A beautiful jugalbandi moment with the brilliant Alam Khan Da on sarod and Arjun Verma bhai on sitar. The musical dialogue between three artists is a core part of our classical tradition.
Having some fun with complex rhythmic mathematics on stage with Shyamkumar Bhosle bhai on the santoor. This '14 in 10' composition was a joy to play.
A casual practice session, or 'riyaaz', with Vinay Desai bhai on santoor. We are exploring Raag Antardhwani, a beautiful creation of the legend Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma ji.
A behind-the-scenes look at the Malhar and Sea Festival in Goa. Here we are on stage, getting ready to perform with Suchismita Di and Debopriya Di.
A group photo on stage at the 'Malhar & the Sea' festival in Goa with my esteemed colleagues. It was a pleasure to perform with such brilliant musicians.
A happy backstage selfie with my fellow artists at the Goa festival. These moments of camaraderie are what make the life of a musician so special.
The entire group of artists who gathered for the Malhar and Sea Festival. Being in the company of so many great musicians is always a learning experience.
Sharing a moment with some of the senior musicians at the festival. I am always grateful for the opportunity to learn from their experience and wisdom.
The poster for the SwaraMalhar music festival in Bengaluru, where I had the pleasure of playing with the brilliant violinist Tejas Upadhye bhai.
With fellow musicians after a wonderful performance in Hyderabad. The energy of a live concert is something I cherish deeply.
About Classical Jugalbandi & Accompaniment
A true jugalbandi is not just playing together, it is a conversation of rhythm and melody. When I perform with a sitar or santoor artist, I focus on the 'sawal-jawab' (question and answer) exchange, anticipating the nuances of their phrasing to create a seamless interplay. If you are planning a concert or an intimate baithak, I am ready to adapt my taals to the specific mood and tempo of your lead artist, ensuring the rhythmic foundation is solid but never overshadowing the melody.
Accompaniment is an art of listening. Before I even touch the dayan or bayan, I focus on the lead artist's intention. Whether it is a complex raga on the sitar, the delicate resonance of a santoor, or the vocal intricacies in a Rabindrasangeet performance, my role is to support and elevate the composition.
My Approach to Accompaniment
When accompanying, I do not just keep time. I look for the 'theka' (rhythmic cycle) that fits the emotion of the piece. In a ghazal evening, for instance, the playing style is understated and supportive, ensuring the lyrics remain the focus. In a concert setting, however, there is space for complex rhythmic mathematics, like 14-beat or 10-beat cycles, where the interaction between me and the instrumentalist becomes the highlight.
Preparing for Your Event
To ensure the best performance, I prefer to align on the setlist or the raga structure before the event. If you are booking for a concert or a cultural festival, I am comfortable with:
- Traditional Jugalbandi setups (Sitar, Sarod, Santoor, Flute, Vocal).
- Intimate Baithaks (Ghazal or classical).
- Larger stage productions requiring high-energy tabla accompaniment.
I have performed at venues ranging from intimate house concerts to festivals like Vasant Utsav in Pune and various events in Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad. I understand the nuances of stage etiquette and am comfortable performing as a solo feature or as part of a larger ensemble. If you are looking for an accompanist who values the traditions of our gharanas while being flexible enough to fit your specific event requirements, let us connect.
