Exploring Movement as Art: Yoga Beyond the Mat
Yoga is as much about expression as it is about alignment. These moments were captured when I let movement take the lead, blending my practice with creative spaces.
A kneeling backbend, Ustrasana, during a creative photoshoot. The soft lighting and the incredible art piece created such a magical atmosphere for practice.
Another shot from my photoshoot, this time in a full wheel pose. It's amazing what a camera can capture when you are bending over backwards.
The camel pose, or Ustrasana, from a different angle. I love how the lines of the body mirror the delicate layers of the art installation.
A variation of a standing backbend. Exploring movement in a creative space like this was a reminder of how yoga can be a form of self-expression.
Holding this standing backbend, feeling the energy of the pose and the space. I'm always looking for fun new ways to combine my love for yoga and art.
About Movement as Art
It’s not often I get to combine my love for the mat with such stunning art installations. While these shots capture the aesthetic side of asanas, my actual teaching is much quieter. In my online sessions, we don't focus on posing for the camera, but on how your body feels from the inside—whether you’re holding a backbend or just breathing through a long work day.
Yoga is often treated as a rigid checklist of poses, but I’ve always seen it as a conversation with the body. When I collaborated with Olie Lighting for these photos, it was a reminder that our bodies are naturally sculptural, capable of incredible grace when we stop forcing the alignment and start listening to the breath.
My Approach to Your Practice
I bring this same fluidity to my online group batches and private sessions. In my Somatic Hatha classes, we move away from the pressure of perfection. If you are joining my Monday-Wednesday-Friday group batch or opting for a 1-on-1 private session, you won’t find me obsessing over 'ideal' form. Instead, I focus on:
- Somatic Awareness: Understanding how your body holds stress, not just how it looks in a mirror.
- Breath-Led Movement: Using Pranayama to settle the nervous system before we even attempt an asana.
- Adaptability: We use chairs, walls, or whatever props you have. My sessions are designed for your living room, not a studio stage.
Whether you are working through an injury, dealing with prenatal transitions, or just need to reconnect after a chaotic week, my classes are about making space for yourself. You don’t need to be flexible to start; you just need to be willing to show up exactly as you are. Let’s explore what your body is capable of, on your own terms.
