Artistic Leather Bags: Embroidery, Weaving & Hand Painting
Our artistic edits turn your bag into a canvas. From intricate Zardozi embroidery and traditional Gond paintings to our signature hand-woven leather textures, we work with you to place these designs on your chosen bag style.
Let me introduce you to our Madurai edit. It’s a special triple-color weave combining Honey Almond tan, Oak brown, and a hint of metallic Bronze leather. This video shows how the weave adds a beautiful, textured statement to any bag, whether it's a structured piece like the Little Perry or a softer design.
A side-by-side look at our Lace Edit on two different bags. On the left is the Tiny Mandy with black lace on a metallic Crystal leather, and on the right is the Jordan with white lace on our classic Oak brown. It shows how the same embroidery technique creates a different feel on each bag.
The Aishwarya bag, named after one of our patrons, is shown here in two stunningly different artistic edits. On the left, the bold Disco Safari print makes a modern statement, while on the right, the classic tri-color Madurai weave offers a timeless, textured look.
The Lazy Hailey tote becomes a canvas for Gond art. Our patron Smitha sent us this lovely photo of her bag, featuring a hand-painted owl motif on a rich Mustard leather. It’s a perfect blend of everyday utility and unique artistry.
Our signature all-woven technique gives the Jojo Baguette a completely new personality. This version in our neutral Sand leather highlights the intricate texture of the hand-matted weave, creating a sophisticated and timeless shoulder bag.
The Jordan frame bag gets an elegant update with our Lace Edit. This piece features delicate white floral embroidery on a deep Oak brown leather, creating a beautiful contrast. It's a soft, lightweight bag perfect for special occasions.
The structured Perry tote bag is transformed by our Woven Edit. This version in a deep Woven Bordeaux leather shows how hand-weaving adds a layer of texture and sophistication to a classic work-to-weekend bag.
Social proof of our Gond art in the wild. Our patron Chandani sent this lovely clip from Bhimtal with her Tiny Wednesday Sling, which features a beautiful bronze Gond painting. It’s a unique, round sling bag that’s both an accessory and a conversation starter.
Here you can see two versions of our Jordan frame bag. The one on the left is a classic solid Sand leather, while the one on the right features our intricate white Lace embroidery on Oak brown leather, showcasing the bag's versatility.
A beautiful example of our Black Lace embroidery on a Tiny Mandy bag, sent to us by our patron Himali from Mumbai. The dark floral pattern creates a stunning contrast against the bright yellow leather, which was a limited-run material.
About Artistic Edits: Embroidery, Painting & Weaving
Every bag here is a collaboration. Whether you choose our triple-color Madurai weave or a custom Gond painting, keep in mind that the base leather matters. Some hides are soft and perfect for fine embroidery, while others are structured and better suited for heavy weaving. When we talk, I will let you know exactly what works for the shape you love so the result is beautiful, functional, and built to last.
Our Artistic Signature
We don't just make bags; we work with our artisans like Danish and Rehman bhai to bring traditional Indian crafts onto high-quality, upcycled leather. These artistic edits are how we personalize our pieces.
The Madurai Edit
This is our signature woven style. It is a triple-color weave that combines Honey Almond, Oak Brown, and a bronze metallic leather. It adds a textured, sophisticated look to any bag, from our Little Perry to larger totes. It is quite a spongy, durable texture that holds its shape well.
The Lace Edit
Inspired by the Kashida work of Kashmir and Sanganeri block printing from Rajasthan, this edit is about delicate embroidery. Because we stitch directly into the hide, we prefer softer leathers for this. You can choose black or white lace, which stands out beautifully against deep browns or vibrant colors. It is a fantastic way to make a simple bag feel special for an evening out.
Gond Art
Our hand-painted Gond motifs, like the owl or floral patterns, turn your bag into a unique piece of art. Because each is hand-painted, no two bags are exactly the same. We love seeing how our patrons, like Smitha, use these to express their personality.
How to Customize
If you have a design in mind, reach out to us. We can discuss your leather choice, the embroidery style, and any structural changes—like adding a zip pocket or an adjustable strap—that you might need for your daily use. We provide digital mockups before we start, so you know exactly how the art will look on your bag. Since we hunt for unique, leftover leather lots, some of these materials run out quickly. If you see something you love, let's talk about it before it is gone.
Chiaroscuro
I am Smriti, and Chiaroscuro is our small studio in Ghitorni where we get our hands deep into leather every single day. We don't believe in mass production, so every stitch—whether it is a delicate thread in our Lace edit or the heavy lifting of a woven strap—is done by one of our artisans from start to finish.
