Meet the Artisans Who Craft Your Bags
Chiaroscuro isn't a factory. We are a family of artisans and patrons who love leather. Come meet the people who make your bags from start to finish.
As we celebrate 10 years, I wanted to share a little bit of my heart. Chiaroscuro is my child, born from a dream to create beautiful, affordable, made-in-India bags while protecting artisanal skills. Thank you to our entire family, especially our patrons, for being part of this journey.
I love introducing new bags, especially when they have a story like the Aishwarya. This design was born from a collaboration with our wonderful patron, Aishwarya, and brought to life by Mukhtar bhai. It shows how your ideas can become a permanent part of our collection.
A heartfelt message from our long-time patron, Vandita. She talks about discovering us 10 years ago and how she loves the single-artisan, made-to-order process. We are so grateful for patrons like her who have become part of our story.
Our patron Divi shares her experience with Chiaroscuro. She loves that our bags are unique, customizable, and make for thoughtful gifts. It's wonderful to hear how her diary holder gets so many compliments.
Here I am with Mukhtar, one of our master artisans, introducing the new Little Sunaina. It’s so important for me that you meet the hands that craft your bags. Mukhtar explains the details of this soft, lightweight hobo design.
Meet Danish, another of our talented artisans. Here, we're talking about the Jordan frame bag. Danish explains the pocket details and construction, and we reminisce about all the custom versions we've made, from woven to Gond-painted.
Mukhtar and I are introducing the Little Perry, the smaller sister to our classic Perry satchel. Mukhtar explains the features, like the semi-firm body and detachable sling, and we discuss customization options like adding a zip mouth.
I'm here with Ishaq, the artisan who crafted these first two Celia bags. He explains the unique cylindrical "damru" shape and the practical details like the hidden magnetic closure. The first Celia was actually a custom design for our patron Adyasha.
A message from Zikrullah, our embroidery expert. He shares his happiness about being part of the team and celebrating our 10-year milestone. His skilled hands are behind our beautiful Lace and Zardozi work.
A message from Ibrar, one of our single artisans who specializes in custom pieces. He shares his pride in working here for four years and in the unique, customized bags we create, something he feels no other company does.
About Meet Our Family: The Artisans & Our Story
Every bag you see here started on a workbench in our Ghitorni studio. When you order, we don't pick a box off a shelf—Danish, Rehman bhai, or Ibrar starts cutting the leather just for you. This 'single artisan' process means your bag comes with the name of the person who poured their time into every stitch, and I want you to know exactly who that is.
The Single Artisan Way
We don't do mass production. At Chiaroscuro, one person handles your bag from start to finish. When you carry your bag, you aren't just carrying leather; you are carrying the hours of work put in by someone like Zikrullah on embroidery or Nirale on hand-weaving. This process means each bag has a human story. Because it is handmade, there are quirks, there are unique finishes, and there is a lot of heart.
Life in Our Delhi Studio
Our space in Ghitorni is a working studio, not a showroom. We are hands-deep in leather, constantly hunting for upcycled hides—sometimes it is soft sheepskin, sometimes it is sturdy buffalo hide. If you visit, you might see us stitching, painting Gond motifs, or discussing a new customization idea. It is loud, busy, and entirely transparent.
10 Years of Co-Creation
We recently celebrated a decade of this journey. Chiaroscuro started as a dream to create affordable, high-quality leather bags in India while protecting traditional skills. Over these 10 years, our patrons have become our biggest collaborators. From Aishwarya helping us design a bag that now bears her name, to long-time supporters like Vandita, our community is the reason we are still here. We aren't perfect, we have made mistakes, but we always try to make things right for our family of patrons and our artisans. We would love for you to be a part of it.
Chiaroscuro
I'm Smriti, and Chiaroscuro is my child. We are just a small team of hands deep in leather at our Delhi studio, making things that last. We'd love for you to see how it happens.
