Featured Architecture Projects by Betweenlines
A curated look at our approach to architecture, spanning from eco-sensitive homes and heritage restorations to modern urban facades. Every project begins with a conversation about the site, the people, and the inherent potential of the materials.
This is "Breathe," an award-winning earth house that embodies my core principles. The curved jaali wall, built with compressed stabilized earth blocks (CSEB), creates a living, breathing skin that connects the home to its lush, natural surroundings while providing ventilation and a play of light.
In contrast to my earth-based projects, this is the flagship Nalli store in Chennai, illuminated at night. The design transforms the building into a beacon, showcasing my capability in handling large-scale, modern commercial architecture and creating a strong brand presence in a dense urban landscape.
The heart of the "Aamra" farmhouse, designed for a food stylist. This space blends the kitchen and living areas, centered around a custom island. It showcases the use of upcycled materials and honest finishes like oxide cement, creating a warm, functional, and deeply personal home.
This video documents the ongoing restoration of the 100-year-old Collector's Camp Office in Nagapattinam. It shows the transformation process, including the application of traditional red oxide finish on the verandah pillars, highlighting my commitment to preserving architectural heritage.
A detail from a residential interior, this built-in window seat is more than just a feature. It is a carefully crafted in-between space, a pause point designed for contemplation and connection with the outdoors, demonstrating my focus on creating architecture that enhances the quality of life.
This view from a renovated home shows how I approach existing structures. By replacing old windows with larger sliding units, we increased natural light by 50 percent, seamlessly merging the dining and living areas with the greenery outside and transforming the home's atmosphere.
A conceptual design for the "Vault House" on a narrow 15x40 foot urban plot. This proposal explores how bold architectural forms, like a curving ferroconcrete vault and a patterned brick facade, can solve the challenges of compact living while creating a unique and expressive home.
A view from the "Breathe" residence, where the architecture and landscape are designed as true companions. The house occupies only a quarter of the site, allowing the rest to become a thriving, eco-sensitive landscape that supports native plants and creates a habitat for local wildlife.
About Featured
We do not rely on a uniform style; instead, our practice is defined by the unique constraints of each site. Whether we are navigating Vastu requirements on a narrow 15-foot urban plot or working within the structural limitations of a century-old heritage bungalow, we prioritize architectural solutions that respect the existing context. We prefer honesty in materials, often choosing Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks or reclaimed wood, and we always welcome a discussion on how these elements can fit your specific site and vision.
Architecture as a Dialogue
Our work is fundamentally a research-driven process. We see every project as a case study, analyzing wind patterns, sun paths, and local traditions to determine the best form. This is why you will see such variety in our portfolio—from the 'Vault House' where we utilized ferroconcrete shells to maximize space on a tight city footprint, to the 'Breathe' residence, where the focus was entirely on bioclimatic design and the use of CSEB (Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks).
Our Core Areas
- Eco-Sensitive Residences: We design homes that breathe. By integrating passive cooling, deep overhangs, and natural cross-ventilation, we reduce the need for mechanical climate control.
- Heritage Restoration: Preserving history is a responsibility. In projects like the Nagapattinam Collector’s Bungalow, we engaged in forensic analysis to understand the original load-bearing walls and traditional finishes like red oxide, ensuring structural integrity while updating the space for modern use.
- Commercial & Retail: Facades are more than just street-facing walls; they are the interface between a brand and the city. Our retail projects, such as the Nalli flagship store, are designed to turn buildings into beacons, balancing aesthetic impact with functional urban requirements.
Material Honesty
We believe the character of a building is found in its raw state. Whether it is upcycling invasive weeds like Lantana into furniture or using locally sourced stone, we look for materials that age gracefully and require minimal processing. When you collaborate with us, you are opting for a design that prioritizes long-term environmental impact over short-term trends.
