The Art of Restful Sleep: Ayurvedic Wisdom for Deep Rest
In Ayurveda, sleep is called Maha Aushadhi, or the great medicine. Learn how to align your daily habits to promote deep, natural rest and body healing.
Our ancient texts refer to sleep, or 'Nidra', as 'Maha Aushadhi', the great medicine. Deep, restful sleep is essential for healing and balancing the body's energies. Here, I discuss why quality sleep is more important than almost any other factor for your long term health.

About The Art of Restful Sleep
Sleep is not just a passive state but a time for your body to actively balance its Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas. I teach my students to move beyond simply lying down and instead focus on active healing by adjusting their evening habits and daily routines. It is less about using aids and more about fixing the rhythm of your day to let your body recover naturally.
Many of us struggle with sleep, but we often treat the symptoms rather than the root cause. At Amritam Yog Foundation, we view the body as a whole system. Poor sleep is frequently a sign of an imbalanced lifestyle, where 'Virudh Aahar' (incompatible food combinations) or late-night screen time disrupts your natural internal clock. During our sessions, we explore how to prepare the mind for 'Nidra' or deep sleep. We practice specific breathing techniques and Savasana, which is more than just lying still; it is a conscious method to signal your nervous system that it is safe to shut down. We discuss practical changes you can make immediately, such as setting a wind-down routine that avoids heavy digestion, allowing your body to perform its vital repair functions. Whether you are dealing with stress-induced restlessness or simply feeling drained, these methods provide a gentle, chemical-free path back to balance. This is about reclaiming your health, one night at a time.
