Wearable Art Workshops: Paint Your Own T-Shirts & Totes

Watching kids turn a plain white t-shirt, tote bag, or pair of canvas shoes into something that tells a story is magical. Here, we help little artistes transform everyday items into wearable treasures with safe, non-toxic colours.

For Mother's Day, my students poured their hearts into painting tote bags and shoes. Each design, from a butterfly on a crown to a memory from a family trip, tells a personal story.

So much love went into these handmade Mother's Day gifts. This video showcases a beautiful stethoscope design for a doctor mom and a peaceful nature scene inspired by Buddhism.

More wonderful creations for Father's Day. The kids painted t-shirts with things their dads love, like cricket, and even made art with their own handprints.

"Whenever I count all the good things in my life I count you Twice." These heartfelt, hand-painted t-shirts were made with so much love by my kinderartists for their dads.

A closer look at the beautiful and unique shoes and bags my students created for their mothers. From floral patterns to beach scenes, each piece is a testament to their imagination.

About Wearable Art: T-Shirts, Totes & Shoes

Let’s get a little messy. In these sessions, kids dive straight into fabric painting on t-shirts, tote bags, or canvas shoes. We use my own BAAKIN non-toxic, edible gum-based paints, so you don't have to worry about skin safety. Every child leaves the studio with a functional, one-of-a-kind art piece they’ve painted themselves—no tracing, no pressure, just their own imagination brought to life.

Why Wearable Art?

For children, art is often about the process rather than the final product. When they paint on a t-shirt or a pair of canvas shoes, they are learning to handle different surfaces, understanding how colours interact with fabric, and—most importantly—finding a way to wear their identity. Whether it’s a tribute to a pet, a scene from a family holiday, or a favourite character, these creations become personal treasures.

Our Studio Approach

In my Bandra studio, we skip the templates. I encourage kids to conceptualise their designs first. Maybe it’s a butterfly crown, a landscape, or even a tribute to a parent. We work with high-quality, EN71-certified BAAKIN poster colours, which are designed to sit beautifully on fabric without the stiff, cracking finish of lower-quality paints.

What to Expect

These workshops are popular for creative birthday parties and seasonal gifts like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.

  • Surface Selection: Kids can choose between t-shirts, tote bags, or canvas shoes.
  • Technique: We cover basic colour theory, colour blending, and how to maintain the vibrancy of the paint on fabric.
  • Duration: Typically 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Outcome: A finished, functional accessory they can wear or gift immediately.

If you’re planning a birthday, this is a fantastic alternative to traditional party favours. Instead of taking home plastic toys that end up in a drawer, the kids take home something they poured their heart into. Drop by the studio or send a message if you’d like to book a session for your little one.
