My Personal Dance Journey: A Lifelong Practice
Dance is my meditation, my anchor, and my way of life. From my childhood roots in Mandya to building Nritya Gurukul in Noida, this is a look at my daily practice, my #100DaysOfDancing challenge, and the moments that keep me connected to this beautiful tradition.
I love Bharatanatyam. A simple practice session at home, where I connect with the rhythm and movement. This is my meditation, my way of staying true to the art form I teach.
A performance piece where I portray different characters. The joy of embodying these roles and telling their stories is what keeps my passion for dance alive.
This is a little bit about me, Akshatha Pai. I founded Nritya Gurukul to share the rich heritage of Bharatanatyam and nurture the next generation of dancers through the Guru-Shishya Parampara.
Dance, Dance, and more Dance! A throwback to my own early days as a dancer. I feel truly blessed to have turned my passion into my profession.
A beautiful moment at the Chandramauleshwar Temple. I couldn't resist dancing with my daughter, even in my western outfit. Dance is a feeling that can't be contained.
An instant reel at the beautiful historical site of Roya Gopuram in Tamil Nadu. The energy of such places inspires me to dance and connect with our rich heritage.
My attempt at a knee spin! It took about 10 tries and my knees were definitely feeling it, but practice is all about pushing your limits and trying new things.
Hurray! Completed 90 days of my #100DaysOfDancing challenge. Just 10 more days to go! This challenge has been a great way to stay consistent with my practice.
Completed 80 days of my #100DaysOfDancing challenge. It's a commitment to myself and my art, balancing my roles as a mom, wife, and teacher.
Successfully completed 70 days of my #100DaysOfDancing challenge. Regular practice is the key to growth, and I hope this inspires my students to stay dedicated.
About My Personal Dance Journey
Balancing motherhood, teaching, and my own practice isn't always easy. Through my #100DaysOfDancing challenge, I try to show my students that discipline doesn't mean being perfect—it means showing up. Whether it is a 60-second reel at a historical site or a late-night practice session in my studio, every moment on the floor keeps me grounded and connected to my roots.
My journey with Bharatanatyam started at age six in Mandya. Though life took me on different paths for several years, the rhythm never truly left me. Returning to the stage after a long break felt like coming home, and that is exactly the feeling I want to cultivate at Nritya Gurukul.
I believe that as a teacher, I must also remain a student. That is why I started the #100DaysOfDancing challenge—to hold myself accountable and to show my 'kids' that growth happens in the daily, often unglamorous moments of practice. You will see this reflection in our studio, where we treat Bharatanatyam not just as a set of steps, but as a form of devotion.
At our Sector 82 studio in Noida, we follow the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara. We do not just teach movement; we teach the meaning behind the mudras and the history of the repertoire. Our classes are intentionally small—capped at 8 students—to ensure that every dancer receives personal correction for their posture and expression.
Whether you are a beginner taking your first adavu or a senior student preparing for your Arangetram, the focus remains on consistent practice and a sincere heart. We incorporate yoga for strength and conditioning, ensuring that the body is as ready as the mind. If you are looking for a space where discipline meets 'masti' (fun) and where tradition is kept alive with modern relevance, you will find a home here.
Nritya Gurukul
I started dancing at six, and even after life took me on different paths, the rhythm never truly left me. Now, I run Nritya Gurukul in Noida, where I pass on the same love and discipline I received from my gurus to my students, including my own daughter.
