Mastering Abhinaya and Expressions in Bharatanatyam
Bharatanatyam is poetry in motion, and Abhinaya is its soul. Join me to explore how facial expressions and hand gestures, known as mudras, bring stories and emotions to life on stage.
A Teacher's Day gift that touched my heart. My student and her daughter performing a piece for me. The devotion in their eyes and gestures is the most beautiful form of Abhinaya.
A lotus in one hand, she asks mischievously. This video is a small attempt at Abhinaya, portraying a beautiful story of Lakshmi and Vishnu through subtle expressions and hand gestures.
"Tujhko Dariya Dil Ki Kasam." My student Krieen beautifully expresses the emotions of this classic ghazal through her sitting Abhinaya. This shows how dance can be powerfully expressive even with minimal movement.
Playing the role of Lord Krishna, Yashoda Maiya, Gopi, and Nayika all in one performance is truly challenging! Here I am, expressing the anger of Yashoda Maiya trying to scold a mischievous Krishna.
A mischievous expression while portraying the character of Lord Krishna. Abhinaya is all about getting into the skin of the character and conveying their personality through your face and body language.
Pointing towards something in the distance, this expression conveys curiosity and wonder. Every gesture in Bharatanatyam has a meaning, helping to build a rich visual narrative.
An expression of concern and distress. Portraying the 'Navarasas' or nine emotions is a fundamental part of Abhinaya training at Nritya Gurukul.
A shy, endearing expression. This subtle gesture can convey a range of emotions, from modesty to affection, showcasing the nuanced art of facial expression in dance.
A commanding yet graceful expression. This pose conveys authority and confidence, essential for portraying divine characters or royalty on stage.
An expression of pure joy and celebration. Dance is a celebration of life, and this emotion is one of the most beautiful to portray on stage.
About The Art of Storytelling: Abhinaya & Expressions
Abhinaya is the soul of Bharatanatyam, and it is more than just acting. In our sessions, we practice the transition between the nine emotions, the Navarasas, by focusing on micro-expressions in the eyes and precise finger placement. You will learn how to hold a character's essence without overacting, which is the essential difference between a student performance and a seasoned professional delivery.
Beyond the Steps: The Soul of Abhinaya
Many students come to Nritya Gurukul focused on footwork, but the real magic happens in the storytelling. Bharatanatyam is incomplete without Abhinaya. Whether you are portraying the mischief of Lord Krishna or the deep devotion of a Gopi, your face and hands must communicate what words cannot.
What We Focus On:
- The Navarasas: We methodically break down the nine human emotions. You will learn how to shift from curiosity to distress and from anger to joy using only your facial muscles.
- Hasta Mudras: These are not just hand signs. Each mudra has a specific meaning and weight. We practice how to use these gestures to build a visual narrative that the audience can follow.
- Character Immersion: To dance a character, you must understand their intent. We analyze the stories behind the songs, ensuring that when you perform, you are not just presenting a routine, but living a moment.
Training Approach
My teaching style follows the traditional path. We start with the basics—breath control and stillness—before moving to complex rhythmic expressions. Because we cap our batch sizes at eight students, you receive personal corrections. I will guide you on how to look beyond the mirror and feel the expression internally.
We also use digital aids, including Google Classroom, where you can watch recordings of our sessions to practice your eye movements and gestures at home. Whether you are training for an Arangetram or learning for the joy of it, my goal is to help you find your unique voice in this classical art form.
Nritya Gurukul
I am Akshatha Pai, and I founded Nritya Gurukul to share the spiritual heritage of Bharatanatyam. I believe every student has a unique story to tell, and my role as a Guru is to guide you in expressing it with grace and confidence. We focus on the discipline of the art, but we always keep the joy and masti alive in our sessions.
