Tabla Workshops & Masterclasses by Ustad Akram Khan
Music is a conversation, and teaching is how I pass that conversation to the next generation. Join me in exploring the intricate rhythms and unique techniques of the Ajrada Gharana, whether you are taking your first steps or refining your improvisational skills.
This is a poster from the Malhar Utsav at the University of Delhi, where I was invited to perform a solo tabla recital. It is always a pleasure to perform for students and faculty at universities, where the desire to learn is so strong.
A blissful moment performing for an amazing audience of students at the University of Delhi. I was so happy to see their excitement and desire to learn new things. These interactions are what make teaching and performing at educational institutions so special.
About Workshops & Masterclasses
In my sessions, we go beyond basic technique. We focus on the 'why' behind every beat—understanding the specific Nikas (hand placement) and Padhant (vocal recitation) that define the Ajrada Gharana. Whether we are in a group workshop at Triveni Kala Sangam or a private masterclass, the goal is to deepen your understanding of rhythm rather than just memorizing sequences.
Understanding the Ajrada Gharana
My teaching philosophy is anchored in the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara. This is not a transactional lesson; it is an immersion into the history and spirit of the tabla. When you join my workshops, we explore the legacy of the Ajrada Gharana—known for its distinct Qaidas, Relas, and complex Tihais.
What We Cover
- Nikas & Padhant: We spend significant time on hand placement (Nikas) and the vocal recitation of bols (Padhant). Understanding how to speak the rhythm is essential to playing it with clarity.
- Art of Accompaniment: A major part of my curriculum involves learning how to listen and respond. Whether accompanying a vocalist or an instrumentalist, we practice the 'conversation' that makes Hindustani classical music alive.
- Improvisation Logic: In my intensive workshops, we break down the mathematics of rhythm. You will learn to construct your own rhythmic stories rather than simply following a fixed script.
Learning Options
- Monthly Mentorship: Conducted at Triveni Kala Sangam, this is ideal for those who want consistent, long-term guidance. Classes are held Monday to Saturday, allowing you to build muscle memory and observe the progress of your peers.
- Intensive Workshops: For students traveling or those looking for a deep-dive, these 1-2 day sessions cover advanced mechanics, specifically focusing on the balanced use of index and middle fingers.
- Private Masterclasses: These sessions provide a focused environment for institutional groups or advanced students, covering rare compositions from the Ajrada archives.
I welcome anyone with an open mind and a desire to learn. Please note that for masterclasses, arrangements for sound systems and setups are to be managed by the host.
