Mastering the Ajrada Gharana Tabla Style
Welcome to my musical journey. This collection captures the essence of the Ajrada Gharana, showcasing my performances, workshops, and the sacred tradition of tabla that I am honoured to share.
In this video, I share a professional tip for tabla players on the art of accompaniment. A good tabla player must listen closely and improvise a pattern that complements the main artist, landing perfectly on the beat to create a truly suitable and beautiful piece of music. This is a key part of my tabla improvisation lessons.

About Featured
Learning tabla is more than just memorizing compositions, it is about developing a deep understanding of the Ajrada Gharana's unique Nikas and phrasing. Whether you are joining my intensive workshops at Triveni Kala Sangam or booking a lecture-demonstration, I focus on the Guru-Shishya Parampara, where we explore the logic of improvisation and the art of accompaniment together.
The Ajrada Tradition
My work is deeply rooted in the Ajrada Gharana, a lineage I inherited from my father, Ustad Hashmat Ali Khan. This style is known for its intricate qaidas and relas, which require a specific approach to finger mechanics. When I teach, I focus on the 'why' behind the rhythm. It is about understanding the conversation between instruments, whether in a solo recital or accompanying a Hindustani classical vocalist.
What You Can Expect
- Guru-Shishya Parampara: My classes are not just tutorials; they are an immersion into the history and spirit of tabla.
- Technical Skill Building: We work on Padhant (vocal recitation) and proper hand placement to ensure clarity in your playing.
- Art of Accompaniment: I teach how to improvise on the spot, ensuring the tabla creates a suitable and supportive piece of music for the main artist.
