Indian Classical Vocal Training: Master Sur and Taal
Build a solid foundation in Hindustani or Carnatic music by mastering the finer details of sur and taal. We focus on technique to help you find your unique voice in a supportive, traditional environment.
A key part of singing is learning how to project your voice with power and clarity. In this video from a Hindustani vocal session, I am explaining the technique of "throwing the voice" so it sounds open and full, a fundamental skill for any aspiring singer.
Our Indian classical vocal classes are open to everyone, including adults who are just starting their musical journey. This is a glimpse into a group session where students learn together, accompanied by a harmonium in a traditional, focused setting.
We believe in a deep understanding of music theory. Indian classical music has two major traditions, Hindustani and Carnatic, and our curriculum is designed to give you a strong foundation in the style you choose to pursue.
About Indian Classical Vocal Training
Singing is about more than just hitting notes. It requires understanding the mechanics of your voice. In our sessions, we focus heavily on the technique of voice throw—ensuring your sound is open and resonant—alongside regular breath control exercises. Whether you are preparing for a Gandharva exam or just starting your musical journey, we prioritize the technical clarity needed to sing with confidence.
At Zen Music Academy, we believe in deep, deliberate practice. Indian classical music is built on two primary traditions: Hindustani and Carnatic. Our curriculum is designed to help you navigate these styles with a focus on the fundamentals.
The Zen Approach to Vocal Training
We prioritize bariiki, the finer details that often get skipped.
- Voice Projection: We use dynamic microphones during practice so you can learn how to manage gain and proximity, essential for both studio recording and live performance.
- Technical Foundations: Our sessions cover the basics of Sur (pitch), Taal (rhythm), and Alankars. For those pursuing a structured path, we offer curriculum support for Trinity and Gandharva examinations.
- Traditional Setting: Our classes are held in acoustically treated rooms with live accompaniment on the harmonium or tanpura, giving you the authentic feel of classical training.
Group vs. Private Coaching
We offer flexibility depending on your learning style. Our group batches are limited to 4-6 students. This size allows for peer learning while ensuring everyone gets adequate personal attention. If you are preparing for a specific exam or need to fix technical issues like pitch deviation or posture, our 1-on-1 private sessions are tailored entirely to your pace and goals.
We have centers at Mira Road and Vasai, creating a local community of musicians who jam, learn, and grow together. Music is for everyone, and whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced singer looking to sharpen your technique, there is a space for you here.
