Supported Healing: The Power of Props
Whether you are stiff, recovering from an injury, or just starting out, my studio uses props like bolsters, ropes, and chairs to make every pose safe, accessible, and effective for your body.
Inversions like a supported shoulder stand can be incredibly beneficial, but they must be done safely. Here, my students use bolsters and blankets to protect their necks and shoulders, allowing them to relax into the pose and receive its full therapeutic effects.
Using props like straps and blocks helps create length and stability. Here, students work on opening their shoulders and extending their spines in a standing pose, ensuring proper alignment and a deeper stretch.
This video shows the essence of healing at my studio. You'll see students using bolsters for gentle forward folds, blocks for support in inversions, and the wall for stability, all part of a mindful, healing practice.
Backbends build courage and openness. In this video, you can see how we use yoga chairs to support the body in deep backbends, making these powerful heart-opening poses accessible and safe for everyone.
The body benefits from movement, and the mind benefits from stillness. This sequence shows how we use chairs and blocks to flow through various poses, finding the perfect balance between active stretching and quiet stability.
Finding stillness while upside down is a practice in awareness. Using a chair for support in this inversion allows the body to release into the pose, calming the mind and promoting circulation without straining the neck.
Chair yoga is a fantastic way to build strength and flexibility with added support. Here, a student practices a supported lunge, using the chair to maintain balance while opening the hips and chest.
The yoga wheel is a versatile prop for exploring backbends and core strength. Here, a student uses the wheel to support her spine in Ustrasana (Camel Pose), allowing for a deeper, more controlled heart-opening stretch.
For more advanced practitioners, the yoga wheel offers a dynamic challenge. This complex pose requires a combination of deep flexibility, core control, and balance, all of which are built progressively and safely in my classes.
A yoga wheel can add a new dimension to twisting poses. This supported twist helps to release tension in the spine and hips while challenging balance and focus.
About Supported Healing: The Power of Props
You do not need to be flexible to start yoga here. My sessions are designed so that if you have a stiff back or a healing injury, we use props like benches and straps to give you the exact same benefits as an advanced practitioner. This prevents you from over-stretching or straining, letting you finally get into those poses that felt impossible before.
Many people think yoga requires extreme flexibility, but that is a misconception that often leads to injury. At YogAngle, we use an Iyengar-inspired approach that prioritizes alignment and support over raw capability. Props are not crutches. They are precision tools that bring the floor to you, support your joints, and allow your nervous system to relax into a stretch rather than fighting against it.
For example, if you struggle with lower back pain, a simple forward fold can be painful if done incorrectly. By placing a bolster on a chair or using blocks to elevate the floor, we create space in your spine so you can decompress safely. We use wall ropes for spinal traction, wooden benches for supported backbends, and foam bricks to stabilize your foundation.
This method is particularly effective for those dealing with:
- Chronic back or neck pain requiring gentle movement.
- Recovering from minor injuries where full range of motion is not yet possible.
- Stiffness in the hips or shoulders from desk jobs.
- Anyone who wants to understand the mechanics of a pose before attempting the full version.
When you join a session, you are not just mimicking a shape. You are using anatomy-focused equipment to build strength and mobility at a pace your body can handle. It is about working smarter, not harder, to ensure that your practice remains sustainable for years to come.
YogAngle
I am YogAngle, and my mission is to make yoga feel like a welcoming space instead of a test of flexibility. We do not care if you can touch your toes on day one. We care about helping you find relief and strength, using props to make every movement safe and comfortable for your unique body.
